Nova Gorica railway station

Highlight • Rest Area

Europe Square (Trg Evrope / Piazza Transalpina) is dominated by the monumental 1906 train station building, now located in Nova Gorica on the Slovenian side of the border. It was once the northern railway station of Gorizia and is the starting point for journeys to the Soča Valley, the Vipava Valley, and the Karst region. The square has two names: one Slovenian and one Italian. The mosaic in the center of the square was designed by Franko Vecchiet from Trieste, who belongs to the Slovene ethnic group in Italy, to mark Slovenia's accession to the European Union in 2004.

View of the Solkan Railway Bridge

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Solkan Bridge (Slovene: Solkanski most, Italian: Ponte di Salcano) is a 219.7-meter (721 ft) arch bridge over the Soča River near Nova Gorica in western Slovenia (by railway terminology it is a viaduct). With an arch span of 85 meters (279 ft), it is the world's longest stone arch railroad bridge (and second-longest stone arch bridge, after Germany's Syratal Viaduct [de], a road bridge). It holds this record because later construction technology used reinforced concrete to build bridges. It was originally built in the time of the Secession, between 1900 and 1905, and officially opened in 1906. ( From Wikipedia )

View of Kromberk Castle

Highlight • Viewpoint

Kromberk Castle, located in the village of the same name, is a typical Renaissance building with an almost square floor plan, whose four corner towers are a striking feature. The original castle was built here at the beginning of the 13th century. Kromberk Castle acquired its present form at the beginning of the 17th century, when the nobleman Giovanni Maria Coronini purchased the property. The castle was heavily damaged in both World Wars, and unfortunately, its original furnishings have not survived. Today, the castle has been renovated and delights visitors with a beautiful, well-kept park featuring Baroque fountains and lapidary objects. The castle is the headquarters of the Gorizia Regional Museum, which houses permanent exhibitions and temporary collections.

View of the Soča River and the Solkan bridges

Highlight (Segment) • Viewpoint

From Solkan to Prevala climb on main road. At the beginning, the road is slightly upright, but then it climbs moderately up to a 180 percent bend, where it lays down considerably and continues moderately to a roundabout. At the roundabout, you can continue straight towards Grgar, right towards Trnovo and Lokve, and left towards Sveta Gora. A little below the top there is also a beautiful view of the river Soča, the railway bridge in Solkan and the newer one towards Goriška Brda and the settlement of Solkan, the town of Nova Gorica and Gorizia.
