Holme Moss Summit and Transmitter

Highlight • Structure

The first mast was built in 1951 to transmit BBC television. The present transmitter was erected in 1984 and is a "guyed mast" structure which is 228m in height.combined with its elevated site, that gives Holme Moss an overall aerial height of 758m above sea level. The transmitter can be clearly seen from both sides of the Pennines.
Transmissions cover North West England (mainly Greater Manchester and Cheshire) and most of Yorkshire; however, signals can be heard as far south as London and as far north as Scotland, whilst coverage can also be heard in Ireland and mainland Europe.
The area around Holme moss is also the watershed for the Rivers Don and Etherow. The River Etherow flows west and eventually ends up in the Irish sea (via the rivers Goyt, Tame and Mersey), whilst the Don's eventual destination is to the east and the North sea so, in this area, drops of rain landing just a few feet one way or the other determines which sea they flow into 140 miles apart.

Black Hill Trig Point

Highlight • Natural Monument

Legendary fellwalker Alfred Wainwright described Black Hill as a desolate and hopeless quagmire. Whilst it can be rather bleak here, especially if the weather’s bad, the remote landscape has a wonderfully-rugged charm. In clear conditions, you can see for miles around. Watch out for bogs, though, even during the hottest of summers.
