Montmelas Castle

Highlight • Historical Site

The castle of Montmelas is mentioned as early as 977. This ancient fortified castle was rebuilt in the 13th or 14th century, and restored in a neo-Gothic aesthetic in the 19th century. It stands in the commune of Montmelas-Saint-Sorlin in the Rhône department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. The castle was listed as a historical monument by decree of June 29, 2000. Montmelas comes from the Latin mons malatus, "mountain laden with fruit".

Col de Saint-Bonnet

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Col de Saint-Bonnet is a beautiful pass in Beaujolais, culminating at 646 meters. The two main ascents are from Salles-Arbuissonas or Rivolet. Without great difficulty from Salles, it offers very beautiful panoramas of Beaujolais. Via Rivolet, the gradients are steeper in some sections, but the climb is short. You can then reach the Parasoir via the Col de la Vieille Morte, almost without any climbing.

Saint-Bonnet Chapel on the Signal

Highlight • Religious Site

The Saint-Bonnet signal peaks at 676 meters. The place offers beautiful panoramas over Montmelas, then over the vineyard and the Beaujolais mountains.

At the top is a 12th century chapel, of Romanesque architecture. It is dedicated to Saint Bonnet, bishop of Clermont in the 8th century. It was a place of pilgrimage to cure gout and headaches.
