Zur Alten 16 Wentorf

Highlight • Restaurant

The "Alte 16" was probably built in the first half of the 19th century by farmer Hans-Heinrich Schmidt as a day laborer's cottage for his farm on Hamburger Landstraße. The day laborer's cottage is first explicitly mentioned in a house letter for Wentorf farmer Wilhelm Remi Schmidt dated December 28, 1848. The old-age tenants, Hans Heinrich and Anna Magdalena Schmidt, both died in 1861. Little is known about the cottage's subsequent use. It was probably first used again as a residence for the farmworkers on the Remi Schmidt farm. It is known that the cottage served as an apartment and classroom for teacher Wenk from May 1883 to the end of 1884, after the school building on Teichstraße burned down. Many years of changing owners followed...
After the dissolution of the Panzergrenadier Brigade 16, stationed in Wentorf, the "Klühnsche Kate," as it was now commonly known, was purchased by the German Armed Forces Association and, on December 14, 1994, donated to the newly founded Panzergrenadier Brigade 16 as a meeting place and clubhouse.
The name "Zur Alten 16" (Old 16) derives from its military use, as the house was located directly next to the barracks of the Panzergrenadier Brigade 16. The brigade was stationed in Wentorf for 32 years, until 1994. But then the Bundeswehr abandoned this location,
so the soldiers left the town in the south of the district.

Over months of work, the old farmhouse was rebuilt and renovated with the help of many hard-working volunteers. The old half-timbered structure was carefully exposed.
Until 2012, the traditional association operated the "Alte 16" independently. On March 20, 2012, Roland Pump took over the restaurant and later the entire building. Since then, Roland Pump has modernized almost the entire building and enhanced the outdoor area with terraces and redesigns.

Bergedorf Town Hall

Highlight • Monument

In a castle-like building with representative interiors, a tower and adjacent park since 1927, the town hall of Bergedorf.
The Bergedorf town hall was built in 1925-27 according to plans of the town planning council Wilhelm Krüger and the architect Georg Lindner.
Before, the city administration used other buildings; like the castle and today's school on Wentorfer Straße. As part of an architectural competition, the present town hall building was built as an extension or superstructure of a villa that existed there at that time. It was built by the architect Johann Grotjahn for the rubber merchant Hermann Messtorff in 1898-99.

A nice little place with a nice fountain. It is also used for short breaks in fine weather. The bust of Kaiser Wilhelm looks over from the other side of the street.

St. Peter and Paul Church, Bergedorf

Highlight • Religious Site

The church in Bergedorf is called St. Petri and Pauli.

The first written mention of a church in the center of Bergedorf took place in the years 1162 and 1178. It belonged at that time to the diocese of Ratzeburg and is mentioned as an existing church with nine associated villages in the Elbmarsch. So it could well have been founded before the first mention. Up to the 15th century, there are up to three sacred benefices (one pastor and two vicars) for this church.

Presumably due to dilapidation this first (still only the Apostle Peter consecrated) church was demolished in 1499 and initially started under the supervision of the Hamburg bishop Christian Berskamp with a new building. From 1501, the Lübeck councilman Hermann Messmann led the construction. The majority of the craftsmen who carried out the new building (carpenters, bricklayers, glaziers, floor layers) came from Hamburg. On June 29, 1502, at the Feast of Peter and Paul, the St. Peter and Paul Church, newly built as a half-timbered room, was consecrated by the Bishop of Ratzeburg to John of Parkentin.

The church is open from 12 to 18 o'clock (if it is possible).

Old Holsten Street

Highlight • Historical Site

The so-called Hasse-Haus was built around 1630 as the organist's house for the parish of St. Petri and Pauli. From 1672 to 1776 it was the home of the Hasse family of organists and thus also the birthplace of the later famous composer Johann Adolf Hasse (born on March 23, 1699). Today it houses the Bergedorf Tourist Information Center.
