Ritterstein No. 279: Mittlere Isenach Forester’s House – Mattern Hut

Highlight • Monument

One of the 300 knight stones of the Palatinate Forest Association stands here and indicates the following:
The "Matternshütte" (= house of Heinz Mattern) stood here around 1794, then the Middle Isenach forester's house from 1822. "In 1836, the forester Heene lived here. See knight stone no. 276. After Heene, the forester Götz also lived [here], who moved to the Lower Isenach forester's house [= Isenach forester's house] by the pond in 1865. The house on the Middle Isenach was demolished in 1871."
Source (partly quoted verbatim): Walter Eitelmann in "Knight stones in the Palatinate Forest", self-published by the Palatinate Forest Association, Neustadt/Wstr.

Wooden Bridge Over the Isenach

Highlight • Bridge

Along the Isenach there are - the further away you go from the Isenachweiher - hardly any crossing possibilities to the other side of the river. This one is - via a small but sturdy wooden bridge!
From here (back to the Isenach pond) you have the choice: either to walk on the wide forestry path or on a nice, soft forest path along the Isenach.

Forsthaus at the Isenach

Highlight • Restaurant

On the south-west bank of the Isenachweiher is the former caretaker's house, a large log house built of wood - today the log cabin for the Isenach
At the restaurant it is possible to rent a rowing boat to explore the lake.

According to this information board of the Beaver Center Rhineland-Palatinate:
"In the early summer of 2017, the presence of a beaver at the Isenachweiher was determined for the first time on the basis of traces of feeding. A short time later, the beaver castle was built in the immediate vicinity of the bank as a visible sign of the permanent settlement of this strictly protected animal species."
Please note: There are warning signs around the lake: "Risk of tree and branch breakage due to beaver damage"!
