ARS Natura – Zuneigung Sculpture

Highlight • Monument

Here, directly at the intersection of Spangenberg - Schnellrode - Heli/Reichenbach - Vockerode Dinkelberg, is the ARS-Natura artwork "Affection" by Karl-Heinz Bieda from Eschwege:

The installation is based on an approximately 600-year-old Indian drawing from the Hopi, Zuni and Navajo tribes in Arizona and New Mexico. The coexistence of humans and animals in one region and in mutual use ensured survival. Humans and animals lived in the same area, drank from the same water sources and followed the same paths. The perception of reciprocity and affection is conveyed here as a three-dimensional message in the form of two oversized animal figures. The clearing provides a view of the village surrounded by fields; The location also reflects the closer relationship between animals and people. In literature, these animals realized in the cave drawing are referred to as mountain sheep.

Maik Miol, Poland
“Liberation of the Imagination”

The mythical figure of the unicorn is a symbol of purity and beauty as well as unbridled strength and speed. It is a gentle creature that only uses its weapon against evil. Its properties are similar to those of positive fantasy. The sometimes monotonous consumer world caused imaginative creatures to disappear from the ground. Here in the deep forest, however, a whole herd of unicorns is making its way into the daylight. Unicorns are very shy and only stay far away from human settlements. “If you want to find it, you have to go through fire and water, through night and ice.”

Along the art path in the forest there are stone slabs with traces of the Iguanodon - a dinosaur that lived in this area around 150 million years ago. The Cretaceous lizard was about 10 m long, weighed 4 tons and could walk upright. As easily as we can follow his steps today, the journey back in time goes back that far - to bygone, humanless times. Let's imagine that we are on the trail of a group of these powerful animals.

Usch Quednau, Köngernheim
"Two sisters"

The work, like the subsequent artistic works, focuses on the motif of Goldmarie and Pitchmarie from the fairy tale “Frau Holle” by the Brothers Grimm. The two sisters were carved from a Japanese walnut tree trunk and accentuated differently. The shape of the wood determined the cut of the sculpture. Growing out of a common tribe symbolizes the dialectic of good and evil: one is only defined by the other.

Christian Huba, Aschau im Chiemgau
»Holda«

Frau Holle presents herself here in an archaic, elementary way, as it cannot be ruled out that the name 'Frau Holle' is derived from the Germanic goddess Holda or Hulda, who was worshiped as the earth mother. She ensured the cycle of the seasons and the balance of nature. From her womb grew the fruits of the earth on which people fed. It could influence wind and sun, rain and snow. There is something ritually idol-like about her here. Plant, animal and human nature seem to unite in it. The Old High German perahta, from which the name Percht, which is common in southern Germany, is derived, means shining or shining one. On the one hand, she stands for the bright and light, but also for the dark, destruction, death... Her other name also suggests this: Hel. She is also goddess of the underworld.

Here is the Ars-Natura artwork “Tree Time” by Joachim Reitner from Göttingen.
The following explanation can be read at ars-natura-stiftung.de:

Sequoia trees are the original concept of an ancient tree.
Sequoia trees are a symbol of stability and longevity. For example, giant sequoias, with their impressive appearance, are considered to be the oldest living trees on earth; they are estimated to be 3,000-3,500 years old.
Sequoias represent strength and are archives of a dramatically changing world. - The giant sequoia has the reputation of being the thickest tree on earth, with values of up to 12 m in diameter at the base reported. The images of a road that leads through the trunk of a giant sequoia tree are well known.
