The 66 m long bench reproduces a section of the sandbag emergency dike against the flood disaster of 2002. 2200 stainless steel signs are riveted to the backrest with the names and places of residence of the volunteer helpers who traveled from all over Germany. 'Setting a monument' can be taken literally here.

The lake has been approved for tourism and water sports since 2005. It was rehabilitated by a mining management company, because before that it was part of the Goitzsche lignite mine. There are three swimming pools around the lake: goitzsche-tourismus.de.

Marina Park Goitzsche

Highlight • Rest Area

The Goitzschesee is an opencast mining lake and a scenic gem with a wide range of water sports, those looking for relaxation and nature lovers.

The Goitzschesee at the gates of the town of Bitterfeld invites visitors to swim, cycle, sail, dive and surf. Several swimming areas, the water sports center and a modern wake park offer the best conditions for water sports enthusiasts.

Nowhere else in the area of the former GDR is the structural change from an ecological emergency area to a sustainably renovated, wonderful recreational landscape as clearly comprehensible as in Bitterfeld on the Great Goitzschesee. Brown coal mining and environmental pollution once shaped the landscape. The open pit area was used for coaling briquette factories, power plants and the chemical industry in the Bitterfeld-Wolfen area. A special feature was the extraction of "Bitterfeld amber". This started in 1975 and until 1993 amber was mined industrially, which was unique in Germany. Minable amber is said to still be in the Goitzsche today.

Today, a well-developed network of cycling and hiking trails surrounds the Goitzschesee and thus also offers many opportunities for joggers and skaters. If you like it leisurely, you can explore the lake by passenger ship, pirate ship or even by catamaran. From the level tower, the red tower or the nearby Bitterfelder Bogen you can enjoy a fantastic view over the region. Various gastronomic facilities are available on the Mühlbeck beach, on the amber promenade and in the city harbor. Houseboats, floating holiday homes, a camping park and holiday homes near the water invite you to stay longer on the Goitzsche.

Three lidos on the Goitzsche invite you to spend a relaxing day at the lake: the Mühlbeck lido, the lido at the level tower and the Niemecker See lido.

Today we went on stage 3 of 10🚶‍♀️💪. That is probably the longest. It wasn't that bad 😇. Although there are constant prohibition signs, the entrances are used diligently for swimming 🏊‍♂️. The circular route is also a cycle path. I sometimes felt lost. Of course there was also a construction site. People had a long weekend 😅. I was …

IRON LAKE CHALLENGE SAXONY-ANHALT

It was a wonderful, albeit long, round today. It seems like a dream - suddenly there is a local recreation area here! The darkness of “Go Trabi go” is gone and no longer true.

Unfortunately, the hiking trails near the lake were so overgrown that they were actually impassable. We tried several times, but always ended up going back to the cycle route. It was much worse than at the Mulde reservoir, where at least there was a continuous footpath.

A bit monotonous (cycle route) with little hidden (discovery) gems around the lake.

One of the lakes that must be circumnavigated for the IronLakeChallenge Saxony-Anhalt. Old open-cast mine. Almost completely asphalted, but very scenic, especially the Goitzsche wilderness, you can see the mast of the 24-hour osprey webcam from NaBu! Lots of cyclists and e-bikers as well as inline skaters on the way, but never an obstacle thanks to the wide paths. Refreshments/supplies …

Today a completely different tour to Thursday. Lots of asphalt, no elevation gain. But it also had its good sides. It started with scraping ice off the car. How I love a start like that😃
The fog created a nice atmosphere and pictures at the beginning. Now I should have made it to all the larger lakes in the Leipzig …

The nature is indescribably beautiful. There's so much to discover. It's a shame that most of the route is paved; it makes your feet quite tired. Since the route is less than 30km, I ended up on the Bitterfelder Bogen.

A strenuous tour, but it was worth it. And the weather played along well too 👍
