Bench at the Teufelsbrücke

Highlight • Rest Area

The forest inn in the West Deister is actually called "Zur Heisterburg", but in the vernacular and among hikers this stop in the Deister is called the Devil's Bridge.

The old devilish bridge over the Grover Grund (Grove = a small deserted place above Rodenberg) has long since disappeared. But the Devil's Bridge is constantly being rebuilt.

But where does the name "Devil's Bridge" come from? A long, long time ago, a hunter named "Dagobert" lived in Rodenberg. One day he set out to shoot a deer up here in the Deister at Groven-Grund. The deer was fatally wounded and collapsed, but unfortunately on the other side of the stream. The stream had swollen so much due to heavy rain that the hunter could not cross. He swore terribly and suddenly the devil was standing next to him. The devil promised him to build a bridge. You wouldn't do that without something in return, would you? You want something in return, said Dagobert?
In return, you are to leave me your soul, but I only want it if you say my name or call me by name at some point in your life.

As long as you don't mention my name, you can live on undisturbed, nothing will happen.

No sooner said than done. The hunter agreed and in no time at all the devil built a bridge. A year, maybe even longer, had passed when several hunters were sitting together in a cozy circle in a restaurant in Rodenberg and telling each other about hunting adventures. Here, of course, hunter Dagobert also mentioned the story about the bridge and the devil. The other hunters laughed at him and doubted the veracity of the story.

You're crazy, Dagobert, there's no such thing.

"The devil will kill you if that isn't true," said hunter Dagobert and whoosh, the devil was there, grabbed the hunter by the collar and took him to hell in front of the astonished group of hunters. Dagobert had disappeared and was never seen again in Rodenberg.

Devil's Bridge Forest Inn

Highlight • Restaurant

For almost one hundred years the restaurant "Teufelsbrücke" near Rodenberg has been attracting recreation seekers. According to legend, in this narrow ravine Satan had helped the hunter Dagobert recover a hunted deer. When the man later bragged about his experiences with friends, he exclaimed, "The devil should fetch me, if that is not true." And promptly, the man vanished through the open window under firelight and hisses. A chapel in the small room under the platform is reminiscent of a refuge already built in 1889.
Quaint, small trip local.

Belvedere Tower (Strutzberg Tower)

Highlight • Viewpoint

The Belvedere Tower is beautiful, almost a little enchanted. Despite the steel construction, which was subsequently raised in 1987, there is only a clear view in one direction, otherwise the trees block the view. The fountain director in Nenndorf, Freiherr von Hanstein-Knorr, had the lookout tower built on the Strutzberg between 1850 and 1852 at his own expense, which is why the tower is also called the Strutzberg Tower. A number of wealthy spa guests supported the construction. The Hanstein-Knorr family coat of arms with the year 1852 is attached to the outer wall of the octagonal stone tower. The Idaturm in Harrl and the Wilhelmsturm in the Rehburg mountains, which were built in 1847 in the neighboring Principality of Schaumburg-Lippe, probably served as inspiration for the Chamberlain of Schaumburg.
