View of Thatched-Roof Cottage and Lake

Highlight • Viewpoint

Here you have a wonderful view of the Kolksee. One could learn about this (coming from the direction of Wielen) that it is located in a push moraine landscape and was formed from a lump of "dead ice".

Wahlstorf Manor

Highlight • Historical Site

Oldest estate in Schleswig-Holstein
“The Wahlstorf estate is a unique oasis where the Orient and the Occident meet in magical nature.”
The Wahlstorf estate, located in the beautiful Holstein Switzerland, is one of the oldest in Schleswig-Holstein and a rare, well-preserved example of an estate from the 16th century. With its late medieval architectural style, it is of architectural significance. The listed estate now includes the manor house, three historic barns and a horse stable. The explorer, ornithologist, zoologist, film producer, painter and writer Victor Baron von Plessen (1900-1980) lived here, who set off on numerous expeditions to the Malay Archipelago from 1924 to 1938. The Wahlstorf estate, the inventory and the East Asian collection of Victor Baron von Plessen are now owned by the Plessen Foundation Wahlstorf. The agricultural operation of approximately 900 hectares is managed by the Foundation

The Schwentine is one of the longest rivers in Schleswig-Holstein at 68 km[3]. It rises 1.7 km southwest of the highest point in the state, the Bungsberg, on a spring meadow northeast of the village of Bergfeld (Kasseedorf) and flows through the entire Holstein Switzerland with numerous large lakes. The river flows through the towns of Eutin, Bad Malente, Plön, Preetz, Schwentinental (Raisdorf and Klausdorf) and flows into the Kiel Fjord (Baltic Sea) in Kiel between the districts of Neumühlen-Dietrichsdorf and Wellingdorf.

Bench with a View of Lanker Lake

Highlight • Viewpoint

From here you have some of the best views of the southern shore of Lake Lanker and also of Sonneninsel (Sun Island). Sonneninsel is the largest island in the southern part of the lake and the only one that was already marked on the 1877 land survey map. It is wooded and a private nature reserve.

Kührener Teich Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural

The 79-hectare "Kührener Teich and Surroundings" nature reserve, designated in 1994, lies directly south of the 207-hectare "Peninsulas and Bays in Lake Lanker" nature reserve, separated by the railway embankment.

By placing it under protection, two nationally important breeding, resting, and feeding areas for endangered and rare bird species, as well as for the rare fire-bellied toad, are safeguarded. The core of the nature reserve is the 40-hectare fish pond, which is on average only half a meter deep and drains into Lake Lanker via a dam on the northern edge. North of the path, which runs along a narrow ridge, a species-rich, wet lowland area extends to the railway embankment. The natural water balance has been restored through damming. Large bodies of water occasionally extend here.

The area is part of the European ecological network "Natura 2000" (FFH area and bird sanctuary).

Old Kühren Watermill

Highlight • Monument

This late medieval watermill is situated in the middle of the nature reserve Kueener ponds on the reed-lined, dammed-up mill pond.
The water mill of the Gut Kuten was first mentioned in 1435 in a sales contract between the Preetz Monastery and the miller Wolmar Rantzow, the owner of the Gut Kühren.
This mill was shut down in 1928. The medium-sized water wheel was removed in 1978 and replaced by a dummy.
The one-story building in the living area and two-story in the mill section as a half-timbered building with thatched roof and half-timbered gable is used privately today.
The dismantling of the mill wheel and the changes to the mill house are very regrettable, as this mill represented the state of medieval manors like no other.

August 16, 2025,Schusteracht Südschleife von Preetz
Today, we had the spontaneous opportunity to drive the southern loop of the Schusteracht. From the Preetz P+R parking lot, we first went to Preetz Monastery, then along stubble fields and through wonderful old avenues towards Schwentine, where we enjoyed a lovely coffee break while observing young barn swallows. We were already full from the ripe blackberries along the path …

The plan was actually to do the entire Schuster-Acht circuit. But due to the extremely high temperatures and a storm warning for the afternoon, we shortened the tour and only did the southern circuit. You can find more information about the tour here.

Rain in the morning - but then it clears up. The afternoon promises to stay dry. A quick train ride to Preetz to complete the second part of the Schuster 8. It actually stays dry.

On the southern loop of the Schusteracht you pass various farms. The route is more asphalted than the northern loop and I would say it …
