Gruttenstein Castle

Highlight • Castle

The medieval castle high above Bad Reichenhall was built around 1218. Gruttenstein Castle has served as a barracks, bulwark, accommodation for salt workers and the administrative headquarters of the Salzmaier. The facility has been privately owned since 2002. But every year there is an Easter market, a wine festival and an Advent market.

St. Zeno Basilica, Bad Reichenhall

Highlight • Religious Site

The Catholic parish church of Sankt Zeno (also: St. Zeno Church, formerly: Munster St. Zeno) is the largest church in the town of Bad Reichenhall in Bavaria. Today the church is the largest Romanesque basilica in old Bavaria.
The parish church is under monument protection and is entered together with the monastery, the cloister and the monastery garden under the number D-1-72-114-136 in the Bavarian list of monuments. The church and monastery gave the St. Zeno community its name, which was incorporated into the town of Bad Reichenhall in 1910. The church stands on today's Salzburger Straße and is surrounded by the St. Zeno cemetery. The monastery of St. Zeno connects directly to the parish church.

The 160 m long building contains around 100,000 blackthorn bundles, from which around 400,000 liters of Alpine brine trickle down from a height of 13 m every day. If you walk along the side facing away from the wind for about 30 minutes every day and inhale the fresh Alpine brine, it has been proven to accelerate the cleansing of the upper respiratory tract and has a relaxing effect. Breathing becomes noticeably easier in the graduation house, becomes conscious and strengthens the immune system. In this way, the graduation house also leads to an improvement in the climate in the health resort.

I needed to stretch my legs a bit after so many hours on the train. Unfortunately, the weather is rather grey, cold and uncomfortable, but things seem to be improving.
Bad Reichenhall is a pretty little town, but unfortunately I hardly saw anything of the mountains that surround it today...
