The island is not accessible due to the danger of landslides. It functions as a nature reserve and is home to many breeding bird species.

The Senftenberg Castle Park - a historical gem. Here you can find water birds that benefit from the population of small fish and numerous insects and aquatic plants. The mallard duck swims most frequently, and the animals often rest on the banks. Much more information about the city's green lung can be found at:

In the old Senftenberg fortress, which was once supposed to protect against the Brandenburgers as a Saxon bastion, you can wonderfully immerse yourself in bygone times. For over 100 years there has been a museum in the castle, which invites you to take an extraordinary trip to the region with modern exhibitions. From the splendor of the Saxon days in today's Brandenburg and the heyday of the fortress, the mining traditions of Lusatia or the history of a small town to modern art, there is a lot to discover.

Lake Senftenberg

Highlight • Lake

The bathing water quality is regularly monitored by independent organizations. The water is so clear that under favorable conditions you can see down to a depth of 5 m. The lake is also a popular fishing area due to its abundance of fish (zander, pike, perch, eel, carp, roach and catfish). The acidic pH value of the lake water in some places was problematic for a long time. This is caused by the gradual decomposition of iron sulfide-containing waste into sulfuric acid and sulfates. Due to the constant dilution with fresh water from the Black Elster, only a few places in the nature reserve and the so-called South Sea are affected by this today. Senftenberg Lake has been a navigable body of water since November 2007 and can be navigated by motorized vehicles (max. 12 km/h).

August 8, 2021,Von Hosena nach Senftenberg
Maybe not the most strenuous hiking route, but a really nice day with the best company. Exciting ruins in the forest, observation tower with a great view, swimming in the "South Seas", snack bar, beer from the local brewery, hip café with coffee and cake and a little bit of sightseeing - perfect.

Today's destination was supposed to be the exhibition "Mommy Cleans Up - The Children's Room in the GDR" at Senftenberg Castle. But I didn't want to just go there, so I took a tour from Hosena to the Südsee (south side of Senftenberg Lake), the observation tower in Senftenberg. I tried to avoid the paved paths wherever possible. A lovely …

Quite exhausting on foot, since the lake is mostly asphalt. Here also the limit of map use has been reached, some paths of the map material are now blocked. From Hosena you have to take the path in front of the railway tracks.
