Pont de Molins (Town Hall)

Highlight • Settlement

pontdemolins.cat

Pont de Molins is a small municipality located right in the heart of Alt Empordà, in the middle valley of the Muga River, and its natural environment brings together several routes and paths ideal for cycling. Furthermore, being a town steeped in history, there are several points of architectural interest to visit, such as the church of Sant Sebastià, the canonical church of Santa Maria del Roure, the Pont Vell (Old Bridge) or the Molins castle, among others.

Essentials

As its name indicates, Pont de Molins links part of its history to the existence of the mills that used the waters of the Muga river, so you should not miss the Closa, La Roca, Son and Jordà mills. Also interesting is a visit to the remains of the canonical church of Santa Maria del Roure and the castles of Molins and Montmartí.

Suggestions

Enjoy a walk along the banks of the Muga river as it passes through the municipality and discover the locks of the Calvet mill and the Jordà mill, which allow you to understand how the river's flow was used. Likewise, you cannot miss taking a good walk through the town center and discover its historic farmhouses and mansions, such as Can Cufí, Can Nei, Can Jordà or the Sant Lluís flour mill.
You can't miss the descent of Anecsper el Riu de Pont de Molins either:

Santa Maria del Roure Monastery

Highlight • Religious Site

The historic monastery of Santa Maria del Roure, at the top of the Serra de Tramonts, preserves between its stones the past of Augustinian monks, pilgrimages and miraculous events that made this place one of the most revered in the region. Last month, a long restoration was completed in which the Generalitat and the Diputació de Girona intervened. The canon hopes to now be a point of reference for cultural activities, such as concerts. Some type of concession is also being considered to make it possible to extract a yield to conserve the complex. The Augustinian order settled in this place, where the oldest remains are of a Romanesque church. The Priory of Santa Maria del Roure was born (XIII), which was a monastery and sanctuary. It is protected as a Cultural Property of Local Interest (BCIL).

In the 15th century, due to the war, the church and other buildings of the priory were in a dilapidated state, and subsequently, through alms, it was repaired. A Gothic style church was built on top of the Romanesque church. Ferran del Campo mentions that miraculous events took place there that made it a place of pilgrimage. The image of the Virgin plays a key role in its veneration.

Old Bridge of Pont de Molins

Highlight • Bridge

The Old Bridge of Puente de Molins, over the Muga River, is a historical work that gave its name to the municipality and that linked the new town with the old town of Molins. It is protected as a cultural asset of local interest. It is located in the center of the town, on the Muga. A few years ago, the route of the road was moved about 200 m to the east and a new bridge was built. Part of the three-arched structure from the 16th century is preserved from the old bridge. XVIII. The old town of Molins, also called Molins de Dalt, is located 1 km west of Pont de Molins.

Near the church there is a small group of houses from the 17th and 18th centuries. The parish church of San Sebastián was completed in 1789, a date that appears on the door lintel.

A few meters north of the canonical church of El Roble, is the sanctuary of the Virgen del Roble (17th century). We find the ruins of the monastery of Santa Maria del Roure 1 km north of Molins, at the top of a hill. It is worth highlighting the parish church of San Sebastián (18th century), and, near the Muga, in different places in the area, remains of old mills, the best preserved of those found to the left of the river, between Pont de Molins and Molins.

Molins Castle is located in front of the Molins neighborhood. Several elements remain, such as the tower, walls and the remains of its Romanesque chapel. It was part of the defensive system of Llers (the term to which it belonged) and was one of the eleven castles that surrounded this town. It is known for the Buac tower. In this half-destroyed castle there are remains from the 11th-12th centuries.

Església de Sant Vicenç

Highlight • Religious Site

Its history dates back to medieval times. Its original construction is attributed to the 13th century, although it has undergone modifications and renovations over the years.

Romanesque style, although it also incorporates Gothic and Renaissance elements. It has a single nave with a semicircular apse and a bell tower that rises above the transept.
Inside the church is the main altarpiece, which is an outstanding work of art. This Renaissance altarpiece is known as the "Altarpiece of Sant Vicenç". It was made in the 16th century and is an example of the Renaissance art of the region.

June 30, 2022,cabanes - Stausee von Darnius entlang der Muga
The way there was a bit adventurous and suitable for a MtB. The route was planned on normal cycle paths. In our opinion, this is not ridable with a normal bike in many areas. Considering the heat here, we chose a quick way back over paved roads. The route was exhausting, but also very beautiful along the Muga. Recommended
