St. Martin's Church, Haringe

Highlight • Religious Site

The Sint-Martinuskerk in Haringe is a historic parish church dating back to the 11th-12th century. The church has a rich history and has undergone several fires and renovations. The current church is a late Gothic brick hall church with a crossing tower made of iron sandstone. The interior contains baroque elements, including paintings, statues and an impressive organ from 1778. The church is an important cultural heritage and still hosts summer organ concerts.

Even if everything seems the same; between the fields there are always new views and panoramas. You have to get involved in this tour on the water, keep looking into the distance and then discover the details right in front of your feet. Therein lies the charm.

Sint-Martinuskerk Roesbrugge

Highlight • Religious Site

Within a stone's throw of each other, in the region around Poperinge, there are two churches dedicated to Saint Martin, namely the church in Haringe and the church in Roesbrugge. However, the history of both churches is far apart. The church in Roesbrugge is a lot younger than the church in Haringe. No remains of the first 15th century mentions of the chapel have been preserved. The hall church, built in the 17th-18th century, had to replace the chapel. The church suffered serious damage once in its existence, during the Second World War. Several memorial plaques hang on the left outer wall of the church. A number also commemorate the First World War. During the First World War, the church tower served as a receiving and transmitting post for communication via telegraph and telephone.

The Golden Eagle

Highlight • Pub

Here you will be welcomed with great enthusiasm by Sam. Please note that it is only open on Saturdays and Sundays. In Roesbrugge, a 'hop shoot' from France, the artisanal brewery Werbrouck is located. Their beer is brewed according to ancient brewing methods with their own recipes. The brewery was founded in early 2018 by brewer Conrad, son Sam and his wife Lien. The beers are brewed with 100% Poperinge hops.
In their brasserie De Gouden Arend you can taste their delicious beers and recently also several of their Poperinge gins.

The Yser at Roesbrugge

Highlight • River

In Roesbrugge you have the choice between life and death - related to the river. Because the city center is located along the river IJser (i.e. the "living" river). The backwater of this river, the Flemish name "Tote IJzer", forms the northern border of the city center.

Roesbrugge is known as the "charming village of the Westhoek". In earlier times it was a prosperous city. A village with a rich trading history that has preserved its heritage: the three-nave Sint Martinus church, the old town hall and the many town houses still characterize the townscape today.

Not far from the church is the Werbrouck brewery. Be sure to try the caramel Dubel Bruin with a decent 8 percent alcohol.

Zwyne Becque

Highlight • River

The Zwijnebeek (French: Zwyne Becque) is a small river in the Yser basin. It flows through the northern French municipality of Rekspoede and forms the border between the French Oostkappel and the Belgian Poperinge for a while before it merges with the Yser at the border in Bambeke. The stream is approximately 7 km long and has a height difference of 12 metres between source and mouth.
