Pink Lake

Highlight • Lake

After a good 4 km run/hike, you arrive at pink lake from Kingsmere P7. Bask in the gorgeous view this stunning vantage point upon your arrival. Loop the lake in whichever direction you like (approximetly 3 km) before heading back to Kingsmere P7.

Pink Lake is meromictic, meaning that its upper and lower layers of water never mix. Normally a lake’s water layers mix completely each year during the spring and fall, because of water density, water and air temperature, and the wind. The mixing of lake waters distributes nutrients and oxygen evenly throughout the lake.

Pink Lake’s waters do not mix, because it has a small surface and bowl-like shape, and is surrounded by steep cliffs that protect it from the wind. There is no oxygen in the deepest seven metres of the lake. (ncc-ccn.gc.ca/places/pink-lake)

Mica Mine

Highlight • Cave

This mica mine is a testament to the region's past extraction of this mineral. It was in operation at the beginning of the 20th century. Located on the shores of Pink Lake, it offers a moment of escape from the world when you pause during your walk to explore it.

Pink Lake

Highlight • Lake

The lake isn't actually pink; it's named after the Pink family who settled the land in 1826. In truth, the lake is often green with algae, because the caldera-like basin protects the lake from winds. Thus the upper and lower waters never mix, meaning the bottom of the lake has no oxygen and anything down there never decays. Interpretive plaques along the trail explain the lake's unique geography, history, and flora and fauna.

Picnic tables and outhouses are near the parking lot, which are always open but you can only access by car on Wednesdays. There are shuttle busses on other days, check the Gatineau Parc website for the schedule.

Pink Lake Lookout

Highlight • Viewpoint

A scenic lookout over Pink Lake, which is a meromictic lake. The surface of the waters are a deep green during the month of August and September due to the abundance of algae in the water.
