Saint-Girons Filter Well

Highlight • Monument

Before the construction of filter wells, drinking water was often contaminated. The well shown here is the first filter well in the Landes de Gascogne. It was built in 1856 to supply the village with water, using a technique invented by Henri Crouzet, an engineer at Ponts et Chaussées. It was rediscovered by chance during construction work. A glass pyramid now protects its remains.
