What to expect on Lisha Kill Natural Area loop from Mohawk River State Park
The trail offers a delightful journey through diverse woodlands, transitioning from younger birch and aspen to impressive old-growth hemlock, oak, and white pine forests, some trees over 200 years old. You'll navigate flowing streams, deep ravines, and wooded highlands, with bridges and boardwalks helping you cross muddy sections. Keep an eye out for the overlook where the Fly Kill joins the Lisha Kill, offering a picturesque view. While mostly easy, be prepared for some steeper sections as the trail dips into and climbs out of ravines, and watch your footing for exposed roots and frequent wet areas, especially along Frank's Trail. Sturdy shoes are highly recommended for this engaging, family-friendly route.
Planning your visit
This natural area is managed by The Nature Conservancy and is a true gem for nature lovers. Be aware that the preserve closes annually between late February and early May to prevent severe erosion during mud season, so plan your visit accordingly. Dogs are welcome on the trail but must be kept on a leash. Parking is available at the trailhead, making access straightforward for a pleasant day out.
