Russian Chapel on the Vršič Pass

Highlight • Religious Site

Not 10,000 people died in the avalanche during construction, but just over 100.

From this spot along a series of steep switchbacks you get fantastic views o the surrounding mountains, including, the Nad Šitom glava, Mala Mojstrovka and Velika Mojstrovka. This is a great place to snap some photos and catch your breath.

Here you often come across old gun emplacements, trenches and accommodation from the First World War

Ajdovska Deklica (Heathen Maiden) Rock Face

Highlight • Natural Monument

The face of the Ajdovščina girl in the northern side of Prisojnik was formed by broken rocks. The most beautiful view of it is from Poštarski dom in Vršič. The story goes that it was a petrified buckwheat girl. When she lived, she was of a good and merciful heart; it led mountaineers and trucks through snowdrifts into the Trenta Valley. She was also a soybean who prophesied to newborns. She prophesied to a newborn in Trenta that he would become a brave hunter like never before under Prisojnik; he will shoot a white chamois with golden horns, sell the antlers and enrich it fabulously. When the soybean sisters learned of the prophecy, they cursed her to be petrified when she returned to the wall.

Vrsic Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Time is too short. From altimeter 2230 only possible with climbing equipment. Great tour with a viewpoint through the mountain window into the valley.

Erjavčeva Koča mountain hut (1,525 m)

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The hut stands on a hill by the Vršiška road on the north side of the pass. The previous wooden hut was built and opened on 14 July 1901 by the Carniolan section of the German-Austrian Mountaineering Association. After World War I, the hut was taken over by the SPD, who repaired and enlarged it and opened it on July 30, 1922; it was named after the naturalist and writer Fran Erjavec (1834-1887). After the Second World War, the hut was taken over by mountaineers from Jesenice, who restored and opened it on 15 September 1946. In 1949, electricity was installed from Kranjska Gora, and in 1951 a telephone was installed. The old wooden hut eventually fell into disrepair, so PD Jesenice decided to replace it with a new, more modern outpost. In the spring of 1987, they demolished the old hut and began building a new one; in the fall, construction work was completed. Due to financial difficulties, it was built gradually. It was inaugurated on August 1, 1993.

Views:

From the hut there is a beautiful view, especially to the east side. To the east, above the screes of the dry Pišnica, rise the mighty western walls of Prisojnik, we can clearly see the face of "Ajdovska deklica", formed by broken rocks, and to the left, above the Krnica, rise the Martuljek mountains with Špik and Škrlatica; the road raises the slope towards the Vratica pass between Nad Šitom glavo on the left and Robičje on the right, which stretches to the north in the direction of Kranjska Gora.

Access:

Car, bus: on the asphalt regional road from Kranjska Gora 11km, and from Bovec through Trento and across Vršič 34km; parking space is near the hut.

AP Erjavčeva koča and Kranjska Gora: AP is near Erjavčeva koča; from Kranjska Gora by road and shortcuts 2h45.
