Around 1350, Naarden was destroyed by Hoekse troops. Partly due to the increasing coastal erosion, rebuilding followed further inland, for which Count William V granted permission in 1351. Due to its location on the sea dike (Westdijk) between Naardermeer and Zuiderzee, Naarden acquired great military significance. In 1355 the defensive belt around the city was completed and in 1403 Albrecht van Beieren gave permission to build a seaport.
