Plaza de España, Rascafría

Highlight • Settlement

Rascafría is a beautiful village in the heart of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range. Located in the Lozoya Valley, it boasts an ideal location for cycling between the Morcuera and Cotos mountain passes.

Its main monument is the Monastery of Santa María del Paular, nestled in a privileged setting blanketed with pine and oak forests. As its name suggests, it is one of the coldest villages in the Madrid region.

Lozoya River

Highlight • River

The Lozoya is a tributary river of the Jarama, which crosses the north of the Community of Madrid. This watercourse, which has its source in the Peñalara natural park, on the Madrid side of the Guadarrama mountain range, is the main supplier of drinking water in the province. Its water is considered one of the highest quality for human consumption in Spain.
In its initial section, where it collects the waters of the Peñalara, Las Guarramillas and Las Cerradillas streams (municipal district of Rascafría), the river is called La Angostura stream. It begins to be identified as Lozoya when it joins the Umbría and Aguilón streams. Its course runs from west to east, unlike most Madrid rivers that flow through the community from north to south.

Matafrailes Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Of the three medieval bridges in Canencia, this is the furthest from the town, near the municipality of Gargantilla de Lozoya. Crossing the waters of the Canencia stream, this bridge of medieval origin has a single pointed arch, with a deck that is wider at the ends than in the center. Thanks to the height of the two rocks that function as its foundations, the height of the pass protected it from possible floods.

A lovely route following the tireless @PiterAka track. There are sections that are more MTB than gravel, but we happily completed it, ending on a very nice path between Lozoya and Pinilla, bordering the reservoir.

Today was the first day that autumn made its presence felt among the pine forests of Canencia and the Lozoya valley, a spectacle for the senses. I will return when all the leaves fall.

The Canencia and Lozoya valleys are two extraordinary environmental spaces in the Sierra de Guadarrama, the great mountain range that marks the geographical borders between the provinces of Madrid and Segovia. The Canencia valley is not very large, it has a hillside of oak meadows and another of pine forests, in the shade, where the route goes down from the …
