Gravel Path Through Pine Forest

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

A nice trail, but for a change I recommend getting off it and driving around the island if possible.

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

An ideal section as an alternative to the crowded EV13, peace, quiet and individual people instead of crowds on the route.

a commemorative plaque in memory of the builders of Przekop Wisły in Świbno
Przekop Wisły - an artificial estuary of the Vistula, between Świbno and Mikoszew, created in 1891–1895 by digging a new riverbed on the section from Przegalina to the Bay of Gdańsk. The current mouth of the Leniwka River, from the ditch to the mouth in Gdańsk, was called Martwa Wisła. During the tourist season, there is a ferry crossing on the Przekop (as part of provincial road No. 501).
In June 1891, earthworks began. On average, about 1,000 workers and 40 steam engines worked on them. Seven million cubic meters of earth were moved during the work. The construction of the ditch, as a very bold hydrotechnical project, cost 20 million marks. A modern water canal was created, 7.1 kilometers long and 250 to 400 meters wide, surrounded by 10-meter-high flood embankments. At the same time as the construction of the ditch, the beds of the Vistula Gdańsk (currently Martwa Wisła), Szkarpawa and Nogat were cut off with locks and flood gates. The course of the flood embankments was also changed.
The construction of the Vistula canal shortened the river's course by approximately 10 kilometers, increasing the decline of its final section. The area of the Vistula basin decreased, from which the Motława catchment area and its tributaries were cut off. A significant change was the formation of a pile cone, enlarged by river debris carried and deposited by the Vistula waters. Since the new estuary was dug, the coastline in its area has moved about 3 kilometers towards the Baltic Sea.
The expensive investment paid off - the flood risk was significantly reduced, which helped avoid further material, social and ecological losses. As a result of the construction of the ditch, Sobieszewska Island was created, and better times came for Świbno - the demand for previously marginal professions increased, and the number of inhabitants increased. The village even gained a railway connection (narrow gauge) with Gdańsk (Gdańska Kolej Dojazdowa), closed in the post-war period.
