Walami Trailhead

Highlight • Trail

The starting point (0 K) of Provincial Highway 30 is the trailhead of the eastern section of Batongguan Traversing Trail (Shanfeng trailhead). As visitors mostly come to Walami for a 2-day trip, they customarily call the trail Walami Trail. Shanfeng trailhead is also known as Walami Trailhead. There is a large parking lot offering parking for buses, passenger cars, and bicycles in front of the trailhead. The Administrative Office of Yushan National Park has also set up travel signs and bulletin boards for information on entry into mountains and the park so that visitors can first get to know about routes and other precautions before entering the trail.
◎The access to Walami Trail beyond Jiaxin requires entry permits.

Shanfeng Observation Deck

Highlight • Viewpoint

Shanfeng Observation Deck is 0.7 kilometers away from the trailhead, and it is also the first rest stop on the trail. During the Japanese colonial period, there was a police station in the area that also had logging activities, so the area is relatively flat and open. Overlooking far ahead, there are overlapping mountains in a sea of white clouds. Light breeze repeatedly blows by, bringing a feeling of comfort, and it makes the place, Shanfeng or wind in the mountain, worthy of its name. The leaves of Formosan gum trees by the deck change color with the seasons. They are tender and green in early spring and lush green in midsummer and start to become falling yellow and red leaves in autumn and winter. The changes between different seasons bring a variety of beautiful looks. The deck, established by the Administrative Office of Yushan National Park, serves as a rest stop for visitors, and the local Zhuoxi Township Office organizes Bunun traditional music festivals and new year festivals at the end of every year so that everyone can learn more about the local indigenous culture.

Shanfeng #2 Suspension Bridge is 1.7 kilometers from the trailhead. The look may not be as impressive as #1, it is exquisite in its own right. Shanfeng #2 Suspension Bridge retains the appearance from the late Japanese colonial period and has rich historical value. Shanfeng Waterfall is under the bridge. The waterfall cascades down the cliff next to the suspension bridge. During the seasons when there is an abundant supply of water, it just comes crashing down the waterfall. During the dry seasons, the waterfall just trickles down the cliff. To the right of the suspension bridge, visitors can overlook a grand V-shaped valley carved out by Laklak Stream. Shanfeng #2 Suspension Bridge is also a turning point for tourists on their half-day tour. The Walami Trail that most tourists know of ends around here, and it is a hot spot for Walami Trail.

Jiaxin Observation Deck

Highlight • Viewpoint

Jiaxin is 4.5 kilometers from the trailhead and at an elevation of about 820 meters. A Japanese police station was established here in 1920 during the Japanese colonial period to monitor the activities of the Bunun people, and there was also a B-level education facility for indigenous children, an exchange center for indigenous products, and a sanatorium. Jiaxin was one of the first police stations to have a medical facility, and it was withdrawn in 1944. The old buildings no longer exist, and what's left are stone steps and embankment on the trail and the Jiaxin Observation Deck for tourists to visit. The Administrative Office has established a campsite, observation gazebo, cooking area, and toilet at Jiaxin Observation Deck. The Central Weather Bureau has established a solar-powered automatic reporting system for collecting meteorological data. The road to Jiaxin offers a good view. The trail can overlook the terrain and landscape of meandering, erosion, accumulation, and transportation formed by the channel of Laklak Stream. If the weather is clear, visitors can see the coastal mountains in the distance, and distinct overlapping mountain ranges and peaks draw a majestic picture.
◎The access to Walami Trail beyond Jiaxin requires entry permits.

Shanfeng #1 Suspension Bridge is 0.9 kilometers from the trailhead. Spanning the deep valleys, the sturdy dark green-painted steel cable suspension bridge is very safe. With high mountains around and deep valley below, it can still make those walking on it feel dangling in their mind. Overlooking the upstream on the left, a string of waterfall comes down from the top of the mountain, cutting deep traces on the ancient rocks and flowing into Laklak Stream. The current Shanfeng #1 Suspension Bridge in use was newly built in early 2020. The bridge pier on the one side of the original suspension bridge was extended to make the observation deck enable visitors to appreciate the suspension bridge and the beautiful view of mountains, forests, and valleys from a different angle.
