The Flemhuder See is the remainder of a much larger body of water that existed until the Kiel Canal was built. Today the lake is a paradise for water birds and this part, separated from the north and the connection to the canal, slowly silts up and offers huge stocks of reed beds for breeding. There is no real access to the lake, but there is an excellent observation station and a place with a great overview.
