The monument is located on the east bank of the Meuse, in front of Japiot Park, next to Porte Chaussée. Built in 1928, it stands on the site of the military butchery destroyed in 1916. The monument is composed of five figures representing the five corps of the army engaged during the battle of 1916: a horseman, an engineer, a territorial , an infantryman and an artilleryman.

Verdun Memorials and Monuments

Highlight • Historical Site

Verdun, in Lorraine, in the middle of the Maasvlakte, is marked by a heavy historical past, closely linked to the First World War. Battlefield of a terrible battle in 1916, which cost more than 300,000 lives in 10 months, the city commemorates this painful past with a permanent tribute to the soldiers killed at the front.

Cumières-le-Mort-Homme

Highlight • Other

Cumières-le-Mort-Homme (with the predestined name) is one of the eight completely destroyed villages in the red zone of Verdun.

It was in February 1916 that the heaviest fighting took place. 10,000 hairy people died in this sector. In 1922, the town was declared a "dead village for France".

Two kilometers in the woods of the hill, you find the statue of the sculptor Jacques Froment-Meurice which is related to the event.

Km 83 past Marre. Crazy route, impassable dirt roads with steep inclines. A detour on the D38 would be much better.
