History of the Rhône-Rhine Canal (French version):

Der Rhone-Rhein-Kanal bei Artolsheim (Deutsche version):

The Rhône-Rhine canal is a French canal which connects the Saône, a navigable tributary of the Rhône, to the Rhine. It is designed as a necessary link to connect the maritime ports of northern Europe with those of the Mediterranean by creating a river link Rotterdam-Marseille via Germany.
You are on the northern branch of the canal, built around 1830. This portion of the canal doubled the Rhine and linked the ports of Mulhouse to those of Strasbourg (the northern end of the canal does not flow directly into the Rhine, but into the Ill which surrounds part of Strasbourg and which no longer communicates directly with the Rhine). Here, the canal was decommissioned in the 1960s following the construction of the Grand Canal d'Alsace and the Kembs-Niffer lock.
The banks of the canal were paved from Marckolsheim to Strasbourg to make it easy to connect the European capital and Colmar by bike.

Marckolsheim

Highlight • Other

The town of Marckolsheim first belonged to the Habsburgs, then to the bishopric of Strasbourg. In 1299, Emperor Albrecht of Habsburg granted the city city status. Ramparts were built at the beginning of the 14th century. The town is an important center of commercial and industrial activity, almost completely razed during the German attack of June 1940. Now rebuilt, it is a very pleasant and well-flowered little town. The inhabitants are called Marckolsheimois. The coat of arms represents a wolf, which recalls either the etymology of the name of the commune, or the presence of this animal in this region.
