Description
If you're looking for a truly challenging gravel biking experience that blends natural beauty with a rich historical narrative, the Mine Hill Preserve – Natalie White Preserve loop from Reservoir Park is a demanding option. This difficult 24.0-mile (38.6 km) route packs in 2404 feet (733 metres) of elevation gain, taking around 2 hours and 36 minutes to complete. It's best suited for experienced gravel cyclists who are comfortable with varied and potentially rugged terrain, offering a unique journey through Connecticut's past.
What to expect on Mine Hill Preserve – Natalie White Preserve loop from Reservoir Park
This route takes you through a landscape steeped in 19th-century industrial history, particularly within the Mine Hill Preserve. You'll encounter remnants of an old iron mine and furnace complex, including fascinating mine tunnels, grated bat hibernacula, and abandoned quarries. The terrain is quite varied; expect some sections, like the Donkey Trail, to be very rocky and steep uphill, which will test your gravel bike and your legs. After the ascent, the trail descends past the old Quarry Bridge, eventually leading to flatter sections and gravel roads like Hodge Road. The smaller Natalie White Preserve offers a contrast with open fields, a boardwalk, and a hilltop memorial sculpture providing distant views of Roxbury's rolling hills and farmlands.
Planning your visit
Starting from Reservoir Park, be aware that while the Roxbury area has excellent gravel biking roads, the internal trails of Mine Hill and Natalie White Preserves are primarily designed for hiking and can be quite challenging for gravel bikes, with some sections explicitly not recommended for mountain biking or e-bikes. Parking is generally available at Reservoir Park, but it's always wise to arrive early, especially on weekends. Given the route's length and elevation, carry plenty of water, particularly during warmer months. The historical sites are best explored during daylight hours, so plan your ride to allow ample time for both cycling and appreciating the landmarks.
