Vlooyberg Tower

Highlight • Monument

Known from the series 'Callboys'

The floating staircase is made of stainless Corten steel, with a color that refers to the iron sandstone heritage.

The Vlooyberg Tower is over 20 m long and 11 m high.

The viewing staircase is located at one of the highest locations, approximately 80 m, in the Hageland.

In clear weather, from the tower in the west you can see the cooling towers of Electrabel in Vilvoorde and the shafts of the Limburg coal mines in the east.

Testelt Village

Highlight • Religious Site

Testelt is first mentioned in the founding of the Norbertine Abbey of Averbode in 1134. It is striking that the oldest spelling corresponds to the current one.
Main attractions:
* Voortberg
The Voortberg is a Hageland witness hill of about 50 meters high on the banks of the Demer. On old maps, the hill is almost always indicated as "Wijngaardberg" (Vineyard Mountain). An appropriate name considering that the southern slope was covered with vines.
Today, the Voortberg in the landscape is marked by a high transmission tower for TV distribution.
* Sint-Pieterskerk (Saint Peter's Church)
Like many other churches in the Demer Valley, the Sint-Pieterskerk is built of brown iron sandstone, which was mined and processed locally. The choir dates from the fifteenth century, the tower is probably a century younger.
The church once consisted of three naves, but the side naves disappeared when the middle part was transformed into a single nave in the late eighteenth century. The Sint-Pieterskerk forms a beautiful whole with the churchyard wall; together they form a protected streetscape.
* Watermill
The beautiful watermill bears two dates. On the side facade, a mason's mark indicates 1608 as the year of construction, but above the door, we find the year 1678. The number above the door belongs to the coat of arms of Servaas Vaes, an abbot of Averbode who was very keen to leave his mark. Silent witnesses of his ambition are the many monuments he had built or rebuilt. His motto is "Ne quid nimis" (Latin: "Nothing in excess").
The mill was owned by the Abbey of Averbode, just like the disappeared beating mill that has made way for villa "Ter Wolf". In the past, four mill wheels turned here to the rhythm of the Demer. The mill has been lovingly restored by the current owner.
* Villa "Ter Wolf"
A beautiful villa from the early twentieth century, which shows the typical natural forms of Art Nouveau. The curls and flowing curved lines tried to imitate nature and refer to leaves, tendrils, and fruits.
Art Nouveau is often seen as an urban style, but the villa shows that there is also a setting for it outside the city. Do you perhaps think that this art style is better suited here?
