Barrack Village at Valkenburg Airfield

Valkenburg airport is part of the Gemeente Katwijk. It used to be a Dutch military airport. During the World War II it was taken over by the Nazis that expanded it with housing for the military that looked like village houses to avoid being bombed by the Allies. Dragon teeth and tank trenches to protect the airport were then also built. The airport was connected to bunkers that were part of the Atlantic Wall defense system.

After the war the airport was used by the Dutch Navy for maritime surveillance. Today it is a civilian airport (general aviation) and used for model plane flying.

The building in the picture, next to the road leading to main entrance of the airport, was a chapel built by the nazis.

The small building accross the road was disguised as a transformer housing but was really a telephone switch to connect to the bunkers part of the Atlantic Wall.
