Former Barge Railway Workshops

Highlight • Monument

The Barge-Bricherasio railway line was built in the early months of 1883 and was inaugurated on 6 September 1885. The railway station complex consisted of the passenger building, the goods depot and the locomotive shed (railway workshop). Since Barge was a head station, a building was needed to house the steam locomotives, to clean and maintain them. The aforementioned building, a typical example of railway architecture, is located near the Hotel Institute. It has two floors above ground, with a plant consisting of two rectangular lateral bodies measuring 6.15 x 9.10 m connected to a central rectangular sleeve with sides 7.30 x 14.40 m, overlooking land owned by the municipality. Access to the building is guaranteed by the two lateral bodies. To facilitate maintenance of the locomotives, the workshop was equipped with a drainage pit to collect the ash and water that came out of the boiler during washing. The building has a roof which in the central part is raised in such a way as to act as an outlet for smoke and steam. The presence of large openings on the sides allowed optimal lighting necessary for repairs. The first floor of the building housed the dormitories for the engine staff.

Between January and May 2017, the restoration of the building was started and concluded.

Beautiful dedicated cycle path, which goes from Barge to the border between Bagnolo and Bibiana, recently paved and put in place. It takes advantage of the site of the ancient Pinerolo-Bagnolo-Barge railway, so it is almost flat, with wide radius curves. From Bibiana towards Bricherasio it continues on a dirt track of about 1 km, in any case in good condition, to then resume on asphalt up to Pinerolo; it is planned to fix this section as well.

On the cycle path around the Rocca di Cavour there is a fountain and a bench in the shade where you can stop before resuming your journey.

Torre di San Grato (Tour Querà)

Highlight • Monument

Also known as "Torre di San Grato" or "Tour Querà" (square tower), it is an 11th century tower that stands in the hamlet of San Grato. It can be seen from far away, and is very suggestive. The road that crosses the hamlet is an excellent, low-traffic alternative to the provincial road for moving between Bagnolo and Cavour. Coming from the provincial road, however, it is worth making a detour to go and see it.

Chapel of San Rocco

Highlight • Religious Site

Once immersed in the countryside, today it is located inside a sports center, between a tennis court and the headquarters of the Alpini. It can also be seen well from outside, through the gates. In excellent condition, the facade has the appearance of having been recently restored, and features two frescoes with very bright colors. It is located a short distance from Via della Pietra and the former Bagnolo station, and is worth a small detour.

War memorial in the city of Barge. In the background, the old elementary schools (still in use as a primary and lower secondary school), still with the old signs "Male elementary school" and "Female elementary school". Taste of the early 1900s.

Old Covered Market and Town Square of Barge

Highlight • Historical Site

From the provincial road to Paesana you can see the building of the ancient covered market standing out. Beautiful, very characteristic construction. Entering the town next to the ancient market you arrive in the town square, with the town hall and a monument commemorating the fighters of World War I (not a war memorial). The whole thing gives a nice impression of simple elegance. Continuing, you arrive at the church of San Giovanni and the actual historic center.
