Old Coastal Road Bypass (Disused Section)

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

To avoid going through the dangerous tunnel, you can lift your bike over the guard rail on the coast side and follow the old stretch of road that has fallen into disuse. Heading south, the old road rejoins the new one near the speed cameras, so crossing is safer, and then continue on the old stretch that is closed to cars. Heading north, you can follow a short stretch of the new state road and then exit at the first turnoff and continue on the old state road, which is much less busy.

Concattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta, Squillace
The cathedral was built in the eleventh century at the behest of Count Roger I to eradicate Greek-Byzantine Christianity and to reaffirm the Catholic rite in the region. In 1643 the bell tower was damaged by an earthquake and later the church was destroyed by other events. It was rebuilt in 1737 by Bishop Michele Abbati and destroyed again by the 1783 earthquake. It was rebuilt by Bishop Nicola Notaris, who consecrated it on May 6, 1798.

Church of Saint George, Squillace

Highlight • Religious Site

Church of San Giorgio, Squillace
The church has not always been called by its current name; on the contrary, it is still called the Church of Purity. This name derives from the existence of a monastery, the so-called Salesian Convent, and from the consecration of the church and the high altar in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Purity and Saint Francis de Sales, which was performed by Monsignor Michele Abbati in 1739. The Feast of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary is celebrated every year on the first Sunday in October.

La Taverna di Pepe, Squillace

La Taverna Di Pepe, Squillace
A perfect trattoria in a beautiful village, with a clean environment and the flavors of rural Calabria.
In Squillace, a warm and authentic atmosphere, just like Calabria can offer. This family-run restaurant.
This restaurant, distinguished by its decor featuring photos and vintage objects, offers a menu of truly well-prepared local dishes. Local wine and extra virgin olive oil are provided by the owners. Norman Castle of Squillace

Highlight • Castle

Castello Normanno di Squillace / The Norman Castle of Squillace
The Norman castle
Squillace Castle dominates the panorama from the highest point of the medieval village and watches over the settlement and its surroundings.
It was built by the Normans in the second half of the 11th century, at the end of the successful campaign of conquest in Calabria against the Byzantines, who had occupied southern Italy for over 5 centuries. The Norman era is certainly the most important for Squillace, which is experiencing a moment of great political-administrative, economic and religious fervor.
The walls shape the outline of the town, which is clearly recognizable from the serpentines that lead from the beach to the upper part. From inside you have a spectacular view of the town and the entire gulf.
Despite the earthquake that struck Calabria and Squillace in 1783, the structure of the castle, the stone masonry and the embossed portal with the coat of arms of the Borgia are still clearly visible.
The rooms of the small castle museum are very interesting: In the so-called “Warrior's Hall”, along with various other historical finds, are the skeletons of two fighters from the 13th / 14th centuries. Century, which were found during an excavation campaign by the Ecole francaise.

Church of the Immaculate, Stalettì

Highlight • Religious Site

Chiesa della Madonna del Rosario, Staletti
Rosary Church
The Rosary Church has a single nave with an apse separated from the rest of the building by a masonry triumphal arch and covered by a semi-dome. The entire complex takes light from seven windows, three on each side, plus one above the main entrance, while two more picocle others are in the abyss. Behind the main altar, on the left, you enter the sacristy. The church does not present any particular reasons of artistic interest, in fact it appears quite poor, both in its essential lines and in its decorative motifs.

View of Caminia Beach

Highlight • Viewpoint

I know the area from Squillace Lido to Soverato very well: the problem is the path of the Copanello tunnel up to the crossroads to the right, before the large bridge, to take the old road: crossing the tunnel is very dangerous. some do it, others lift the light bike to jump the gardrail and go sideways, in the middle of debris brambles etc.etc. Why not make an accommodation project? I've been waiting for him for 15 years!!! but no administration does anything!!!!!!
