Mortemer Abbey

Highlight • Historical Site

Originally built in 1134, Mortemer Abbey is a former Cistercian monastery close to Lyons-la-Foret. The abbey was a gift from Henry I of England.

Over time, the abbey fell into disrepair. Despite being rebuilt in the 17th century, it stands in ruins today.

"Here ... died for France 23.24.25 August 1944"
"This cross is erected on the site where five resistance fighters of the ORA (Organization of Resistance of the Army) were shot on August 23, 1944. Attacking the German troops in full retreat from the fighting in Normandy, they were surrounded, taken, tortured and shot dead on the spot. Three resistance comrades arrested a few hours later suffered the same fate. Walker, remember their sacrifice. "

Chapelle and Sainte-Catherine Spring

Highlight • Religious Site

Charming chapel built in the 17th century housing a natural spring. Discovered and restored in 1987.
the legend of the fountain of singles:
So this legend concerns all women who want to find the man of their life in the year. This same fountain in the name of Saint-Catherine would have virtuous water. Indeed, young women came there to throw a coin or a hairpin in order to find a husband.
Prayer:
Saint Catherine be good, we only have hope in you.
You are our boss.
Have mercy on us.
We implore you on our knees, help us get married.
Pité !, give us a husband because we are burning to love.
Deign to listen to the prayer of our deeply loving hearts.
Oh !, you who are our mother, give us a husband.
