Les Bourgeois de Calais (also known as The Burghers of Calais in English) is a sculpture by Auguste Rodin. It was originally cast in bronze in 1895 and is one of Rodin's most famous works. The sculpture commemorates an event during the Hundred Years' War, when the French port city of Calais surrendered to them after an eleven-month siege by the English.

The sculpture depicts six characters: Eustache de Saint Pierre, Jacques and Pierre de Wissant, Jean de Fiennes, Andrieus d'Andres and Jean d'Aire. These men became victims of a ritual of surrender imposed by King Edward III of England in August 1347. They sacrificed themselves to save the lives of the inhabitants of Calais, who were about to be conquered by the English. Rodin turned this seemingly simple capitulation ritual into an act of heroism, in which the citizens saved the city from destruction.

The sculpture can be seen in the Musée Rodin in Paris, but twelve original bronze casts and numerous copies have also been made1. It is a powerful symbol of courage and sacrifice, and it remains an important work of art in the history of sculpture.

Saint Pierre Park

Opened in 1863, the Parc Saint-Pierre in Calais is a relaxing green space in the center of the city. The park, named after the former municipality of Saint-Pierre-lès-Calais that later became part of Calais, features shaded paths, centuries-old trees, and a playground for children. The park is also home to a number of notable monuments, including the 1863 Fountain of the Three Graces, a monument to the fallen in 1904, and a bunker that now houses the Musée Mémoire.

Jean Rooble: "Bastien"

Highlight • Monument

This fresco was created as part of the urban art and street art festival in the city of Calais organized in 2021 by Les Ateliers du Graff.

Jean Rooble is part of the collective “Les Frères Coulures”. He is an artist from Bordeaux who has a hyperrealistic artistic universe. He works around the chiaroscuro technique halfway between illustration and realism. His works focus on universal and humanist themes.

He offers us a photorealistic portrait, that of Bastien, a young man whom he has already painted in the past.

This fresco replaces that of Ludo Lassalle, which caused a bit of ink to flow locally (photos Sept 2021).

Tom Bragado Blanco, also known as Braga Last One or Tom BB, was born in 1987 in Marseille and has been drawing since childhood. Self-taught, he graduated as a letter painter in 2007 and in 2011 he took an airbrush course. He started transforming t-shirts, caps and various supports under the pseudonym "Q.ter".
As usual, he offers us a magnificent achievement, the magnificent realistic photo portrait of a man who has just broken down the wall to see what is happening outside (photos Sept. 2021).
