The ferries across the Kiel Canal run around the clock as needed. You'll definitely come over, no matter when you come. And it's free. There is nothing to complain about. ;)

Hochdonn Railway Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

The construction of the Kiel Canal (1887 to 1895) cut the route of the Marschbahn east of Brunsbüttel. A swing bridge was built for the railway at Taterphal, which existed from 1895 to 1920. After the canal was widened (1907 to 1913), however, the swing bridge blocked traffic on the canal. Since the subsoil was too soft for a high bridge near Taterphal, it was finally built in Hochdonn.

On July 1, 1920, the railway line was relocated over the new high bridge. Due to the war, the work to relocate the route had been delayed. From Wilster to Burg we went over a high bridge with a high dam on both sides. The supporting pillars resting on high concrete bases and the load-bearing bridge construction gobbled up 15,160 tons of steel.

The prescribed clearance height of 42 meters above the canal and the length of the bridge (2,218 meters) have fundamentally changed the landscape. The enormous mass of earth for the high dam was mostly taken from the cut back of the Geest.
