Description

If you're looking for a peaceful, accessible escape into nature, the Hiking loop from H. G. Reist Wildlife Sanctuary is an excellent choice. This easy 1.7-mile (2.7 km) hiking route, with a minimal 68 feet (21 metres) of elevation gain, can be completed in about 42 minutes. It's perfect for families, beginners, or anyone seeking a quiet stroll through diverse habitats.

What to expect on Hiking loop from H. G. Reist Wildlife Sanctuary

This loop takes you through the heart of the 111-acre H. G. Reist Wildlife Sanctuary, offering a journey through woodlands and wetlands. You'll find yourself surrounded by various trees, mosses, and mushrooms, with boardwalks guiding you over marshy areas. While some sections might have glimpses of nearby houses, much of the trail provides a deep-woods feel, especially as you pass through the wildlife corridor. The terrain is largely flat, making for an easy walk, though you should be prepared for potentially muddy spots during wetter periods.

Planning your visit

The sanctuary is open from dawn to dusk, and you'll find well-marked, color-coded trails throughout. For convenient access and parking, the Kelly Adirondack Center on St. David's Lane is often recommended as a starting point. If you require wheelchair access, the Oakmont Street trailhead is your best bet. Remember to bring insect repellent during warmer months, as bugs can be quite active.
