Kandel Pass

The Kandel offers an ascent of quite alpine quality with the starting point in Waldkirch. A good 900 meters in altitude and up to 13% incline on a narrow mountain road demand one or the other drop of sweat. You will be rewarded with a great view from the high point at 1,200 meters down into the Elztal, the Rhine plain, across to the Vosges and, with good visibility, even to the Alps in the south.

Renovation measures were in progress in 2019 and 2020 and so the first almost 350 meters in altitude and 3.6 kilometers from Waldkirch are smooth and freshly asphalted again. In general, the route is much wider in the direction of St. Peter/Glottertal, but here too the ravages of time are gnawing, and in some sections you have to be careful on the descent.
