Santa Maria Val Müstair

Highlight • Settlement

Santa Maria Val Müstair
The street village is located in the Münstertal at 1375 m above sea level at the exit of the Val Muraunza valley. The Muranzina, coming from the valley, flows through the village before it flows into the Rambach. Main road 28 runs through Santa Maria, which leads over the Ofenpass to Zernez in the Lower Engadine and to the state border at Taufers in the Münstertal. In the village, the Umbrailpass road branches off from the main road, which leads to Bormio in the Valtellina.
After Charlemagne escaped a terrible storm with divine help, according to legend he laid the foundation stone of the community in 801 by building a chapel.
The community of Santa Maria was first mentioned in documents in 1167/70 as Capellam sancte Maria in Silvaplana. This was a chapel. The village gradually grew up around the chapel.

This cafe in Santa Maria Val Müstair does a range of savoury and sweet food including superb strudel! However, this isn’t the most impressive feature. Kindness was! We arrived there borderline hypothermic after a dreadful descent of the Umbrail Pass in freezing cold rain. The owner immediately fetched some warm dry hoodies for the worst of us and the staff were very quick to bring us the hot drinks & food we ordered as we shivered & dripped in their immaculately clean cafe.
We stayed for more than an hour to get properly warm & allow the rain to clear through & there were no complaints at all from the staff (we did eat & drink lots whilst there 😁). Make this your no 1 stopping point in Sta Maria 👌

Lü Village and Church

Highlight (Segment) • Settlement

Everyone knows the big climbs in the area: Umbrail, Stelvio, Ofenpass. The ascent to Lü is a great way to wind up the altitude in peace. At 3.7 kilometers you make good 320 meters. The view is glorious, there is little going on, you can hear the cows ringing and enjoy the view of the valley. What more do you want?
