Fountain with Sculpted Faces, Chur

Highlight • Monument

Arcas is arguably the most beautiful square in Chur. Surrounded by historic rows of houses and lined with several cafés and restaurants, it exudes a distinctly Mediterranean ambiance. Naturally, it also features a fountain where you can refresh yourself. The fountain at Arcas is made of gneiss stone from Andeer. It depicts the local legend of the Scalära spirits.

Obertor Tower, Chur
Together with the Malteser and Sennhof towers, the Obertor is one of the remaining tower structures of the medieval city fortifications. Due to its decorative appearance, the Obertor soon became a landmark of Chur. The four-storey building, which becomes narrower towards the top, fits into the settlement structure modeled on the city wall, but at the same time visually stands out from this row of buildings thanks to its bright exterior. The paintings in the archway date from the 20th century, some of them based on old city views.

Italian Bridge Chur

Highlight • Bridge

Italian bridge since October 28, 2020, Chur
175 tons of structural steel were used for the deck and arch, while a total of 430 m3 of reinforced concrete and micropiles with a total length of 540 m were installed in the two abutment structures.
With this new cycle and pedestrian bridge, the city of Chur is richer by an architectural attraction. Overall, urban added value is achieved, which means, in addition to meeting the traffic requirements, a high level of attractiveness for tourists, among others, and another calling card for Chur

Chur–Brambrüesch Cable Car

Highlight • Structure

Aerial cableway Chur - Känzeli (Brambrüesch) LCB 1957
As planned, the Chur-Brambrüesch mountain railway now consisted of two sections, with the first section consisting of an aerial tramway and the second section of a gondola lift with two-seater cabins. The construction of the cable car was awarded to the Von Roll AG works in Bern, while the gondola lift was built by the company Giovanola Frères in Monthey. After initial preparatory work in the fall of 1956, actual construction began in the spring of 1957. The official commissioning of the Brambrüeschbahn took place on December 14, 1957.
The aerial cableway of the first section Chur-Känzeli has remained largely unchanged to this day, while the gondola lift was demolished in 1998 and replaced by a used Von Roll VR 102 four-seater gondola lift. But the concession for the aerial tramway will expire at the end of 2006 and there is also a project for a replacement system. Actually, an extension of the existing gondola down to the valley on the route of the cable car that was to be demolished was favored, whereby the Känzeli station would have become an intermediate station with cabin passage. But various objections let this project run into a dead end. The reason: A gondola could not climb as steeply from the valley station as a cable car; Rather, the route would have to run over masts at a low height over the grounds of the town hall, private property and then along the steep mountain slope. In order to avoid a costly dispute with the owners of the affected property, the construction of a new aerial tramway with a capacity of 600 to 800 people per hour is being discussed. Thus, both sections would again be coordinated in their capacities. Only the change to Känzeli will not be spared the passengers of the Brambrüeschbahn in the future.

Malteserturm Chur

Highlight • Historical Site

Maltese Tower, Chur
Why this four-story building is called the Maltese Tower cannot be explained historically, especially since there is no evidence of a connection to the so-called Order of Malta. However, the former name of the building is more revealing: Powder Tower. The building owes this name to its former function as a powder magazine. At the same time, the tower once formed the southwestern cornerstone of the city wall, which was built in the first half of the 13th century. And today the Powder Tower still marks the transition from the old town to the younger settlement outside the former city walls.
