S-charl Village

Highlight • Settlement

S-charl is an old mining settlement in the Val S-charl. You can reach the picturesque (and) remote mountain village from Scuol via the road. A bus line operates there, which also transports bicycles (phone reservation recommended). From the Val Müstair, you can reach S-charl via trails and farm tracks over the Pass da Costainas. The route is a highlight of the Swiss National Park Marathon.

There are two very nice hotels and a small Hotel Garni on the outskirts of the village.

In the middle of the village square is the beautiful old Bären-Brunnen (Bear Fountain) for refilling water supplies for the onward journey.

Costainas Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Statistically speaking, the Pass da Costainas isn't a particularly high pass. Its summit sits at a mere 2,251 meters. However, the scenery is breathtaking, and the singletrack through Europe's highest Swiss stone pine forest is beautiful and flows smoothly. Before reaching the pass, you have to climb from Scuol in the Inn Valley to S'charl, a route that's never particularly steep but is quite long. In the village of S'charl, you can restock your supplies before tackling the pass. This section is entirely doable in the saddle. After a short downhill section on a trail, you'll reach a gravel road that takes you to the small village of Lü. A few more kilometers and you'll arrive in the Val Müstair.

Fairy Tale Forest Trail

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Fairy Tale Forest Trail is a beautiful and apt name for the trail between Alp Champatsch and Alp da Munt.

Depending on the direction of travel on the way through the magically beautiful stone pine forest (which is called Arvenwald here), the personal interpretation of the fairy tale is either the way to the witch or the lucky escape after she ended up in the oven ;)

Where you have a clear view of the Munster Valley, you can see the Ortler in the background.

At Alp Champatsch you can fortify yourself with delicious Alp cheese or Engadin nut cake before the strenuous ascent. The Alp da Munt is not managed in summer, but you can get fresh milk from a refrigerator for a thaler in the cash register of trust.
