Mapraggsee

Highlight • Lake

Mapraggsee
The Mapraggsee is located in the Tamina valley at an altitude of 865 meters above sea level. Located in the St. Gallen municipality of Pfäfers, the Mapragg reservoir is operated by the Sarganserwald power plants, just like the Gigerwaldsee upstream. In addition to the Tamina, which also flows out of the reservoir, the Mapraggsee is fed by the Bschissnenbach, the Läuibach and various other streams.
The Mapragg reservoir is located in the middle between the villages of Vättis and Pfäfers. This stretch is also covered by a post bus service. On the east side of the Mapraggsee, a road runs slightly above the shore.

Valens Old Sawmill Museum

Highlight • Historical Site

Valens Old Saw Museum
Small museum on the history of the old wood saw in Valens. The museum is freely accessible.
In 1990 the saw was shut down by the owner Ferdinand Reiter Junior and in 2004/2005 it was restored by Valens Tourismus, under the leadership of Kurt Wyrsch, and reopened as a museum to the public. The old sawmill in Valens is freely accessible all year round and is an exciting witness to the timber industry of the last century.

Antonius Chapel, Vasön

Highlight • Religious Site

Antonius Chapel Vasön
Contemporary chapel with a long history
Vasön has had its own church since the early 18th century, which, after two years of construction (1708-1710), was inaugurated on June 30, 1711 by the Bishop of Chur, Ulrich von Federspiel, in honor of the Baptist John, the hermit Antonius and Pachomius. Over the past 300 years, up to the present day, various renovations have been carried out.
On October 20, 1903, the chapel burned down to the height of the windows during a foehn storm. Thanks to donations from all over Switzerland, the chapel was able to be rebuilt in the old style.
In 1980 the chapel had to be demolished due to its poor condition. The new planning was handed over to the Ghioldi architectural firm from Bad Ragaz. As a result of Mr. Ghioldi's death in 1978, the plans were carried out and completed by the Wikart and Gassner architectural firm from Bad Ragaz.
On August 15, 1981 the chapel was opened by Bishop Dr. Otmar Mäder from St. Gallen inaugurated.
The beautiful chapel in the middle of the village is a gem of church culture that the population can be proud of.
