Axenstrasse — Lakeside Route and Views of Lake Lucerne

Highlight • Cycleway

If you are considering taking this road by bike, I tell you ... let it get stuck! It does have a nice view, but when the 40 ton trucks rush by 50cm next to you, it's just not fun anymore!

Alte Axenstraße

Highlight • Trail

Absolute must - the road winds spectacularly along the rock. Great to drive. Part of it (approx. 5 km) is closed and is supplemented by a shuttle bus. The Swiss are just cautious...

It is a feast for the eyes along the Axenstraße. Contrary to the research in advance, I found the ride as good and pleasant. As a cyclist, I had no problem driving along here.

The Altdorf landmark, Altdorf
The Tell monument, created by the Solothurn sculptor Richard Kissling, was inaugurated in 1895 with a magnificent celebration and its own festival. The event attracted great national interest and the Federal Council even sent a delegation of three to Altdorf. Interestingly, the year 1307 adorns the base of the Tell monument and not the legendary founding year of the Swiss Confederation, 1291. The reason: according to calculations by the Glarus historian Aegidius Tschudi, the Rütli Oath and the Apple Shooting took place in 1307.
