Valens Old Sawmill Museum

Highlight • Historical Site

Valens Old Saw Museum
Small museum on the history of the old wood saw in Valens. The museum is freely accessible.
In 1990 the saw was shut down by the owner Ferdinand Reiter Junior and in 2004/2005 it was restored by Valens Tourismus, under the leadership of Kurt Wyrsch, and reopened as a museum to the public. The old sawmill in Valens is freely accessible all year round and is an exciting witness to the timber industry of the last century.

Old Road from Bad Ragaz to Valens

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

It's easy to ride with a gravel bike. With a racing bike, choose the gear ratio wisely and pay attention to everything lying around on the road (stones, branches, leaves, etc.).

St. Leonhard Chapel, Bad Ragaz

Highlight • Religious Site

ST. LEONHARD CHAPEL, BAD RAGAZ
Archaeological research revealed that the first church was built at the beginning of the 14th century.
The church is documented around 1410. On June 5, 1412, the St. Leonhard Church and the consecration certificate were drawn up.
In 1631, a restoration was carried out by Abbot Jodocus Höslin in the early Baroque style.
A further restoration was carried out around 1721 under Abbot Bonifaz zur Gilgen. This was done in the high Baroque style. Another interior restoration took place in 1946, during which the previously whitewashed frescoes were brought out again. The complete restoration took place between 1979 and 1981. In 2001, the St. Leonhard Chapel was given a new coat of paint.
The vestibule: It is designed as a memorial room for the Battle of Ragaz, which took place on March 6th - St. Fridolin's Day - 1446. The wall inscription is a battle report by the historian Aegidius Tschudi. It is assumed that Niklaus von der Flüe, the holy brother Klaus, led the Obwalden flag as a squad leader. A relic of the saint lies in the reliquary grave of the main altar. On the side wall there is a gargoyle from the tower from the early days of the church.
The nave: The light through the Romanesque and Gothic windows gives the simple room its own atmosphere. The pictures on the walls depict the Mother Mary weeping for her son, St. Nicholas and St. Anne. They come from an early St. Nicholas and Anne church near the farm in the village. The two side altars from 1634 were created to venerate the Mother of God and St. Fridolin. The upper pictures depict Saint Erasmus and Saint Joseph. The fresco painting depicts the coat of arms of the nobles of Reitnau. The founder Friedrich von Reitnau, the brother of the then abbot, Werner von Reitnau (1416-1435), is probably buried in front of the choir. The consecration crosses date from the early days of the church.
