Wichenstein Lake

Highlight • Lake

Wichensteiner See, Oberriet
The Wichensteiner See is located in the municipality of Oberriet at the eastern foot of the Semelenberg. A clay pit operated on the area of the present lake from 1830 to 1972. The lake lies at an elevation of 420 meters above sea level and has a maximum depth of approximately 5.5 meters. It is divided into a smaller northern basin and a larger southern basin. The area was acquired by the municipality of Oberriet in 1976 and declared a nature reserve in 1982. East of the lake lies the "Grube Loo" (Loo Pit) – also a former clay pit – which, together with the Wichensteiner See, is a fen of regional importance and an amphibian spawning area of national importance. The lake is fed, in addition to underground springs, by the Wichensteinerbach stream, which drains the northern foot of the Semelenberg. The outflow structure leads into the Aubach stream.

Landsgemeindeplatz Appenzell

Highlight • Historical Site

Who doesn't know this place in Switzerland. Here, voting is still done traditionally by a show of hands. So if you are ever in Appenzell, you should also visit the square and pay attention to whether you feel a historic "Gramsele" through your spine. :-)

Säntisfluh Scenic Landscape

Highlight • Viewpoint

Great landscape. At the end of September the sun is very low, the wall stays in the shade for a long time.

View of the Säntis North Face

Highlight • Viewpoint

From here, you can see the north face of the Säntis, including the LSB (Long Distance Ski Area) from Schwägalp. The large and modern Hotel Säntis is also located here.
On August 1st, you can also see the 80x80 m Swiss flag, if it is actually there (weather permitting).

Wildhaus Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

On the Toggenburg side a relatively long ascent, which climbs almost permanently even in the village of Wildhaus. This is followed by a scenic descent into the Rhine valley. From the Rhine valley, the alternative route via Grabs is an option.

Great tour with more snow than expected/hoped for. The skis had been more practical at times.

In the most beautiful colors of autumn, after carpets of golden and red leaves, among the still angry green fields, against the background of the sapphire sky and delicate veils of clouds ... In such surroundings you can forget about effort and fatigue. A great route, a lot of steep sections, one short section (about 50m), where I had to …
