As early as 1231, there was a wooden chapel in the “Kirchschlag” district, which belonged to the Abtenau mother parish. The current parish of Gosau was founded in 1500. The current church was rebuilt between 1500 and 1507. Along with the Sebastian altar in the parish church of Hallstatt, this Sebastian church is one of the oldest evidence of the Sebastian cult in Austria.
