Pilgrimage Chapel of Our Lady in Vens

Highlight • Religious Site

This chapel was built after the Vandans district of Vens was spared from the plague - it remains a regionally important place of pilgrimage to this day.

At this location, there is an old railway bridge over the Ill River, which now serves as a pedestrian and cyclist bridge. It originally connected the Bürs substation on the other side of the Ill River to the main line running via Bludenz. The tracks of this connection are still there today, but are no longer in use.

Alfenz Cycle Bridge

Highlight • Bridge

Alfenz bicycle bridge, Lorüns since 2011
The bicycle path bridge over the Alfenz, filigree half-timbered construction in concrete
Concrete and design
Bridges are elements of connection and deserve special design attention. The state of Vorarlberg is committed to its modern and contemporary architecture and tries to promote and implement this in the area of infrastructure and in places with sensitive landscapes
With the Marte. Marte architectural firm from Weiler, a local and at the same time internationally renowned partner with many years of experience in concrete construction and design was gained. The Marte. Marte team of architects has already proven several times in recent years with extraordinary bridge constructions that concrete and its special design options can contribute to enriching the landscape (see Cement + Concrete, issue 2/09: Schanerloch Bridge, Dornbirn). Nevertheless, at the beginning of the planning process it was necessary to explore various materials for bridge construction and to weigh up the advantages and disadvantages. As part of the preliminary project, wood, steel and reinforced concrete were examined in more detail. The lessons of the past have shown that the immediate proximity to busy roads leads to increased maintenance costs for wooden bridges, as the combination of spray mist, de-icing salts and exhaust gas cocktails damages the junctions of the individual wooden rods and their connecting structures. A pure steel structure was not an option, as the risk of sparks, particularly in fog, appeared to be too high due to the numerous high-voltage lines in the area. For this reason, the line operator rejected steel as a material, and the choice fell on reinforced concrete as the ideal material for exposed locations such as this. A total of 33 tons of steel were processed.

St. John of Nepomuk Church, Lorüns

Highlight • Religious Site

Johannes Nepomuk Church, Lorüns
The Lorünser Church of Saint John of Nepomuk was built in 1820 and has had new furnishings since 1959. On the tower there is a sgraffito of Saint Nepomuk by Hubert Fritz, and he also wrote the sgraffito on the altar wall. In an altar niche is a bronze cast based on a design by Bechtold, showing the wedding at Cana. The casting was carried out by the Grassmayr company. The glass windows were designed by Hubert Berchtold and Romuald Hengstler. Anton Behmann made the church organ in 1878. For this he used parts of the organs from Warth from 1791 and from Schnepfau from 1831. The church bell by Johann Heinrich Ernst was made in 1768.
