Gasthof Hochfirst

Highlight • Restaurant

The Gasthof Hochfirst is picturesquely situated in the South Tyrolean mountain landscape and offers a first-class view. The Ötztal Trek passes right by the inn and is therefore a popular stopover for long-distance hikers.

South ascent of Passo Rombo (Timmelsjoch)

Highlight (Segment) • Mountain Pass

Crisp 800 height meters complacent as completion? The Timmelsjoch is not only famous for the beautiful, rough mountain landscape. The total of 1,800 meters of altitude from St. Leonhard, 30km away, puts muscles and lungs to the test. You can feel the glacier's proximity and the Jochwind, while one clenched teeth climbs one of the largest continuous slopes of the Alps.

Here every year at the end of August the Ötztal-Radmarathon takes place, which is considered by experts to be extremely difficult. In 1988, the Giro d'Italia led with a stage from Meran over the Timmelsjoch to Innsbruck. The pass separates Austria and Italy and lies at an altitude of 2474 m.

The Timmelsjoch High Alpine Road is open daily from 7 am to 8 pm. Due to the exposed high mountain location, a tour is only possible in the period from about the beginning of June to about the end of October. Driving is at your own risk, a functioning bicycle lighting is mandatory.

The eagle monument on top of the port represents the brotherhood and friendship between Italy and Austria. A nice detail in a border port.

Passo del Rombo / Timmelsjoch (2,509 m)

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Timmelsjoch is undoubtedly one of the most impressive places in the Ötztal: far the rugged mountains open all the way down to the valley and the wind slowly drives the clouds over the peaks. The Timmelsjoch is the highest road in the Alps, and in the summer countless cyclists fight their way up the countless serpentines.

At the top of the Joch is also a small inn, in which both hikers and cyclists can strengthen.

Just above the tree line, there is a fantastic view: the bends to St. Leonhard lie before you and the mountain panorama brings the landscape to life. Cycling in the Alps can be so beautiful!
