The Last Mammoth of Liechtenstein

Highlight • Monument

The last mammoth in Liechtenstein
A project by the Schichtwechsel art association, in cooperation with Atelier62, domus Schaan and Skino
May - November 2023
The last woolly mammoth living in Liechtenstein died around 150 BC. It was the leader of the Carthaginian general Hannibal, who crossed the Alps with his army and a herd of mammoths and set up camp at the site of today's Pfälzerhütte on the Bettlerjoch in Liechtenstein. According to traditional sources, Liechtenstein's last mammoth lived to be 93 years old and died in Vaduz.
Exhibitions and events in 2023 will honor Liechtenstein's last mammoth and tell stories from then until now from the area of today's Pfälzerhütte. The artistic, historical and interview contributions create a playful approach to the mountain world and at the same time point out the dangers of the mountains, climate change and the extinction of animal species.
In order to revive the tradition of the folk marches from the 1970s, a Liechtenstein folk march to the Pfälzerhütte will also be announced in the 2023 season. A public film competition on the theme of the project will also be announced. In addition to the highest house in Schaan, the routes to the Pfälzerhütte through the Triesenberg and Vaduz Alps will also be included and exhibitions will be held in the Schaan center and in the Vaduz Haberfeld. The project offers both the residents of Liechtenstein and tourists a new access to the Liechtenstein mountains.

Pfälzerhütte

Highlight • Mountain Hut

The Pfälzerhütte is a mountain hut at an altitude of 2,108 meters and is located at the top of the Naaf Valley on the border with Austria. The hut is an ideal starting point for tours to the Naafkopf, where the borders of Austria, Switzerland and Liechtenstein meet, as well as to the Liechtensteiner Weg, via which the Brandner Ferner, the Mannheimer Hütte and the Schesaplana can be reached. Above the hut towards the Naafkopf is a climbing garden with routes from 4th to 7th difficulty levels.

You can find all information about prices and opening times at alpenverein.li/huetten/pfaelzerhuette-2108m.

Trail to Vorder Grauspitz

Highlight • Trail

From the Pfälzerhütte you can follow this path to the summit. The route is strenuous and also dangerous, especially in bad weather. There is no mark.

The border is not far from the Pfälzerhütte. There is a small sign there.

Naafkopf Border Crossing

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The route starts a few hundred meters from Pfälzerhütte and should take around 1 hour. The summit can be seen quite well from there. Even in summer there can be snow up there, like in my case.

Naafkopf Ascent

Highlight • Summit

The ascent to Naafkopf you have a great view all the time. The path is a beautiful mountain path, initially still wide across meadows, then the way narrower and more rocky, respectively one runs on stony, scree underground and in some places the way is also easily exposed and therefore there is a certain in this way Dizziness needed. The view is already beautiful all the time and on the summit you will be rewarded with a super panoramic view. A very recommendable destination !!!!
