Castell de Sant Ferran

Highlight • Castle

Documented in 1095 and under the rule of the counts of Cerdanya, this fortification is built on the ancient remains of an Iberian defensive construction.

The castle was considerably enlarged during the 13th century, connecting its walls with those of the city of Berga. Scene of conflicts and assaults, it was rebuilt again in the 18th century and again in the 19th century, due to the fact that Berga was the center of the Carlist wars.

View of Berga

Highlight • Viewpoint

From this point, you can see Berga, the historic capital of Berguedà, surrounded by the mountains that for decades set the pace of coal mining in the region. Its old town, presided over by the church of Santa Eulàlia and the old walls, retains the character of a city that has managed to combine its industrial heritage with a long cultural and mountain tradition.
