Historic Monuments of Sahagún

Highlight • Historical Site

Sahagún is a regional town in the province of Leon located between the Cea and Valderaduey rivers. A center for commerce already during the Roman occupation of the Iberian peninsula, it gained importance by being along the Jacobian pilgrim route towards Santiago.

The Arco de San Benito is an impressive monument in Sahagún, located in the region of Castilla y León, Spain. It was built around 1662 by the architect Felipe Berrojo to replace the old Romanesque portal of the Monasterio de San Benito. The arch is designed as a triumphal arch, under which the N-120 passes, and is also known as "la puerta de Sahagún" (the gate of Sahagún). The monument is richly decorated with a central shield, inscriptions and sculptures of Saints Facundo and Primitivo. At the top is the royal shield, and there are also sculptures of Alfonso III and Alfonso VI, who were important protectors of the monastery.

Church of San Esteban of Calzada del Coto

Highlight • Religious Site

Calzada del Coto is a small town on the alternative French Way and one of the first points after leaving Sahagùn towards Santiago. A great place to have a coffee and rest next to the Church of San Esteban. There is also the San Roque pilgrims' hostel if you are going to spend the night.

Meseta Central

Highlight • Natural

The Meseta is a plateau of over 200,000 square kilometers in the heart of northern Spain. In the north it is bounded by the Cantabrian Mountains that you can see well on the horizon with good visibility and from a slightly elevated position. The sun often shines mercilessly down from the sky, which is why good sun protection and sufficient water supplies are absolutely recommended. At the same time, there is often a cool, strong wind that can almost freeze you and, in the worst case, turns cycling into a fight against the forces of nature. Above all, however, the Meseta impresses with its color contrasts between heaven and earth and its ability to change from absolute dryness in summer to green freshness in spring.
