Roncesvalles

Highlight • Settlement

Roncesvalles is a town with only 22 neighbors and, nevertheless, it is one of the most important points on the French Camino de Santiago.

For many centuries the life of this small town revolves around the coming and going of pilgrims. Which explains the majesty of its Pilgrims Hospital and the entire set of the Collegiate Church of Santa María.

Of course, it has a hostel for pilgrims and an inn. Also a hotel and a hostel, so there are accommodation options for all tastes.

If you need to stop for something to eat, the inn and the hotels have a bar-restaurant.

You will find a fountain at the exit of the town if you follow the road bike route, just after the inn.

Orgambide Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

Nice viewpoint. Camping is explicitly forbidden

HRP hikers can decide here whether to descend to Béhérobie like the HRP on the map (recommended only if supplies are needed), follow the paved road east into the valley to the Harpea cave or, parallel to this, follow the grassy ridge above the valley (easiest Route, recommendation if you can do without the Harpea cave)

Organbide Dolmen

Highlight • Other

There are about twenty-seven menhirs, among which one larger one stands out, with a hole in its middle and a couple of engravings. At certain times of the day and year, the sun's rays enter through this hole.

Col d'Arnosteguy

Highlight • Mountain Pass

One of the most inhospitable and spectacular mountain passes in the eastern Pyrenees, with several slopes, all of them very difficult.
The landscape is wild and wonderful. You can breathe absolute tranquility and you can dedicate yourself exclusively to enjoying the views, the horses, the sheep, the cows and the suffering on the bike. The summit is on the border with Spain, although there is no road that crosses the border, so the pass runs entirely in France.
I have climbed it on 2 of its slopes. The first time I climbed it on the slope that crosses the Col d'Orgambide, on the D428 road, which starts from Estérençuby. The first 3 km are very easy, until you cross the detour to go up to Artaburu, where the road begins to have slopes of more than 10%. From there, to the summit, the climb is very hard, around 9%, on a very rough and bumpy road, with a lot of humidity and crossing a wonderful beech forest. Once you reach the top of the Col d'Orgambide, you turn right and continue climbing for another half kilometre with a gradient of 11%. There comes a small descent, to face the last 3 kms, the first 2 very hard with several 13% gradients. The last kilometre is very easy and has panoramic views that are simply wonderful.
The second time I climbed it on the side that starts from Arneguy and Ondarolle. This side is harder than the previous one, with a central section that is hellish, being 6 kms at an average of 10%, and a very hard km at 12% and 18% gradients!!! The final part is more gentle. You cross the Croix de Thibault in the penultimate kilometre of the climb. The final kilometre is very gentle and with beautiful and exciting panoramic views.

Trail to Col de Bentarte

Highlight (Segment) • Trail

Coinciding with the GR 12 route, this path runs through the Irati Forest, so you are guaranteed shade and a very picturesque landscape. In addition, when you arrive at Col de Bentarte you will be able to enjoy beautiful panoramic views of both the Spanish and French sides, since it is located right on the border.

Ibañeta Pass (Col de Burregieta)

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Collado de Burregieta offers wonderful views from its 1441 meters above sea level. You can get there from Puerto de Ibañeta or from Orreaga/Roncesvalle along picturesque paths or combine both and take a circular route.
