The castle ruins in Olsztyn are a picturesque place with a rich history, perfect for a short bike trip. The castle, which is part of the Trail of the Eagles' Nests, remembers the times of Casimir the Great and stormy sieges. Today, you can admire the remains of the walls, the cylindrical and square towers, as well as the foundations of old buildings. The area around the castle offers interesting bike routes in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland, and an additional attraction are archaeological discoveries, including Neanderthal finds in a cave in the lower castle.

Old Market Square in Częstochowa

In the Middle Ages, the Old Market Square served as the market square of Old Częstochowa.

The buildings in the market square were burned down during the Swedish invasion.

Townhouses on the eastern and northern sides of the square remain preserved. From the 15th century to 1812, the town hall stood here, but was destroyed by fire. According to legend, Napoleon Bonaparte spent the night in the inn at the Old Market Square on his way to Moscow with his troops.

In 2007, archaeological excavations began in the market square. These led to the discovery of the city well, the foundations of several no longer existing buildings, likely the city scales, and a gallows.

Balancing Sculptures by Jerzy Kędziora
The entire project is complemented by original balancing sculptures in the form of a "theater." This is undoubtedly one of the main attractions of the square's new arrangement. There are 14 sculptures, forming several thematic groups of figures.

The group of sculptures forms a collection dubbed "Teatrum – Igrce Częstocha" by the author. This is the largest exhibition of works by Częstochowa artist Jerzy Kędziora in an urban setting, and it can now finally be fully admired.
