The Church of the Protection of the Mother of God in Sławatycze is an impressive Orthodox church from the early 20th century, the main spiritual centre of the local community. Built in 1910–1912 according to the design of Alexander Puring, it represents the Byzantine-Russian style with characteristic red walls and white details and five onion-shaped domes. The church survived a turbulent history, including the war period, the Vistula Action and years of devastation, but thanks to the efforts of Orthodox monks from Jabłeczna and the support of parishioners, it was renovated. The church is located on Kodeńska Street, right next to the market square, and today it once again delights with its restored frescoes and icons, being an interesting place to stop during a bicycle trip through Podlasie and Polesie.

The victorious battle of Kodeń, January 22-23, 1863.
Against the backdrop of numerous battles of the January Uprising of 1863, the Battle of Kodeń stood out in particular.
Every building was fought over
The attack on the Russian army in Kodeń was exceptional. The atmosphere in the city was decidedly anti-Russian. On a January night, an insurgent unit gathered in the "Borek" forest near Kodnie. Officially, the leader of the party was to be Bolesław Grubecki, nominated by Roman Rogiński. In fact, the constructor of the Kodeń Victoria was Paweł Necki, a former tsarist officer. A unit composed of 250 people, mainly representatives of the backwater nobility from Tuczna, supported by the townspeople of Kodeń, successfully attacked the artillery park stationed in Kodeń and a small garrison, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Kazański. The Russians were stationed at three points. The first was in the city center in the place where the Pilgrim's House is now located. The second one near the bridge over the Kałamanka river. The third in the former Sapieha castle. So the battle stretched from the Market Square to the castle. The surprise of the Russians was huge. The insurgents, armed with scythes and several pistols, seized the city in a spectacular way. On the Russian side, 5 soldiers were killed, 15 were wounded, and 50 (some sources say 80) were taken prisoner. 50 rifles and ammunition and money, a total of 4,000, were captured. rubles. Then, Necki at the head of the unit went to Woskrzenice, placing himself under the orders of Rogiński.

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Kodeńska

Highlight • Religious Site

The history of the Sanctuary and the miraculous image of Our Lady of Kodeń is closely linked to the Sapieha family. However, the entire story begins much, much earlier…

A legend is linked to the origins of the Gregorian Madonna, dating back to apostolic times. By virtue of Christ's testament from the Cross, Mary became the Mother of the Church, remaining with the community of Jesus' followers until her Assumption. One of the Lord's disciples who was responsible for creating her image was St. Luke the Evangelist. According to tradition passed down in the Church, he painted a portrait of Mary on a cedar plank in Nazareth and created a statue of the Mother of God (in the altar on the right, with a painted portrait of the Mother of God). The figure of the Mother of God is said to have traveled to Constantinople – the capital of the Christian East – during the first centuries of the Church's history. It was here that a young Benedictine monk named Gregory saw the statue with his own eyes. Captivated by the sculpture's beauty, when he was elected Pope Gregory the Great, he brought it to the See of St. Peter (the figure of St. Gregory can be seen on the left side of the painting, holding a three-armed crosier). From then on, the image of Our Lady became linked to Rome, bearing the name of Our Lady of the Gregorian Church after the Holy Father.

Dołhobrody Observation Tower

Highlight • Viewpoint

The tower overlooks the surrounding fields, the tower itself is located on a hill, which improves the view of the surrounding area. The entrance to the tower is quite steep and it rocks a bit. Beautiful view, almost no buildings.
